Just want to know how people here would rank Genesis' albums, and I want to see if tastes differ from the "norm" as much as mine do. I don't include the very first and the very last because they are special, and I have to say, though I own them, I haven't heard the three last ones yet....

Ivan, if you check my SEbtP review, you'll see I call it a 'flawed masterpiece'. I know very well it's far from perfect, but - unlike the probably superior "Foxtrot" - it really does something for me, and has been for years one of my favourite prog albums. Strange indeed, as I've never really been a fan of the band - especially not in the Italian sense, since here there are people who literally worship Genesis and all its members. |

| I think SEBTP has only one flaw- More Fool Me. It's not even THAT bad either, but it's weak compared to the rest. I love the rest- yes, even The Battle Of Epping Forest. Before I came here I had no idea it wasn't too popular, and I loved it as much as most anything else there. Tony Banks incidentally considers 'After The Ordeal' to be the worst thing they ever recorded. I could think of at least 10 worse songs, and I love After The Ordeal too- gorgeous music on that. |

A very difficult one this. As my favourite band, the order changes all the time (except for my number one, which is always the same), and the list I give now is in no way set in stone.
For today though:

I will only say about SEBTP that "Firth of fifth"'s instrumental section has some of the most BEAUTIFUL music ever this side of classical music, the way Hackett plays the same melody as Gabriel did on flute, that moment gives me the chills....spectacular. -------------

From Genesis to Revelations - massively underrated album IMO
Wind and Wuthering
And Then There Were Three
Trespass - Vastly overrated IMO. I love White Mountain, really enjoy Visions of Angels and The Knife, but find the rest of the album pretty bland.
Only other album I'm interested in obtaining is Lamb.

I agree. For the core albums, the reasons are subtle. There are just some I like to listen to more than others. I disagree. SEBTP is the one album that IMO dosn't belong in a graetest prog top 10. Gabriel's phoney accents is a put off for starters. Banks's solo on Cinema Show is overlong and meandering & apart from Hackett's solo on Firth Of Fifth his guitar playing is not impressive.
Just my oppinion.

I agree with you. "Shapes" (aka the self-titled album) is their worst. It sounds like a "contract obligation album", IMO. It also brings me sad memories, so due to the connection to those sad memories my rating for this album is maybe not very fair, but...most of the songs in this album are boring anyway. I disagree with both of you. The self-titled album (aka "Shapes") is still 3-man-era-Genesis at their creative peak. I have always (since 1983) found it more interesting than "ATTWT", slightly better than "Abacab", but not as good as "Duke". On the following albums "Invisible Touch" and "We Can't Dance" it's obvious that Banks/Collins/Rutherford began to run out of steam (as song-writers). It's perhaps a good thing that they made only two studio albums together the last ten years before Collins left.

I feel the second half of 'Shapes' is very weak indeed. The first half is fine to excellent- Mama and Home By The Sea I think were reasonably successful updates of their 70s sound into the 80s, while That's All is reasonable AOR.
The second half though I think was rushed. 'Illegal Alien' is simply embarassingly dreadful, 'Just A Job To Do' and 'Taking It All Too Hard' are unmemorable imho, 'It's Gonna Get Better' I find quite dull- 'Silver Rainbow' is the best track of that half. When asked about the album I think Mike Rutherford praised how consistently good the first side was but never even mentioned the second. Hmm... But that's just my opinion, of course.
I think all of the post Duke albums of the 80s had half a good album at best. Too many ballads and rather lacklustre R & B attempts gummed them up a lot of the time. I simply don't blame Phil Collins alone for that though- there were three members in the band. Two of them weren't Phil Collins. First - The six albums with Hackett chronologically
Seventh - The album just before Hackett joined
Eighth - Archive 1
Ninth - The other two live albums with Hackett, again chronologically
Eleventh - The first album after Hackett left
Thirteenth - The first Genesis album
Fourteenth - the remaining Genesis albums
Can you tell I like Hackett?!

As Salmacis also wrote, Rutherford said in one interview done in 2003, I think (still included in their official website) that he thinks that "shapes" was their best album! (incredible, but true!). Banks and him agreed that the second side wasn`t as good as the first, and the three of them didn`t like "ATTWT" anymore! Collins said that for him "The Lamb" was their best!
I wrote about this album before, in my review in Prog Archives: "Mama" is an awful "horror movie" song. "That`s All" is good and has funny lyrics. "Home by the sea" is more or less good, but "Second Home by the Sea" is boring, like they were thinking "How are we going to fill one side of this album?". "Illegal Alien" has offensive lyrics, IMO. "Taking it all too hard" is a ballad a la Collins. "Just a Job to Do" is another Pop song. From "Silver Rainbow" I only like the music from the first verse. "It`s Gonna Get Better" is the best of the album, with good lyrics and music.

Visually I totally agree. No one was better than Gabriel at ating out a story, A very unique performer indeed
 However, his varying takes on English accents are a big turn off for me!

I finally heard it. I just can't agree more. My review will follow. Abacab wasn't that bad, still haven't heard IT and WCD, but after listening to all-time-worst Genesis song "Illegal alien", I just don't see any way those two albums could be worse than this. -------------

And even worst the music that goes with them.
Honestly, every song in Love Beach is a masterpiece compared with this "thing".

The lyrics are incredibly atrocious and the music horrendous, but at least we don't hear that MOST ANNOYING SINCE CAR ALARMS THAT WAKE YOU UP AT SIX O CLOCK ON A SUNDAY "accent" that Collins uses when singing "Illegal Alien".... it's just unbeareble... it's also insulting, devoid of any irony, sarcasm, INTELLIGENCE. And to top that, the stupid photo with all three wearing moustaches....(well, that's not a music-related complaint but anyway, it sucks).... No, I jjust wrote I review when I made my case that that song only catapults SHAPES to the last place not only between Genesis' albums but also between N'Sync ones....
 Really, I could listen "who dunnit" and I'd feel stupid. I hear "Illegal" and suddenly I feel ASHAMED TO BE HEARING GENESIS... now how often can that happen -------------

Incredible, at last somebody that likes ATTWT as much as I do. It's not a popular album around here as I see, and I don't understand... it's no FOX nor SEBTP but it has great songs. -------------
