Subject: Awkward Situations Because of Prog?

As a 19 year old college student, listening to prog has definatly put me into some awkward situations. For example
1. Buying prog cds in stores. Now there arent that many name brand stores that sell prog, but it made me feel weird and alienated when at Best Buy I bought In the Court of the Crimson King and Close to the Edge at the same time. The cashier was a girl my age, and she looked at the cds and looked at me and made some remark like "This stuff is weird. How can you even listen to this?" I admit, I was pissed, but I left and blasted all of Close to the Edge all the way home in my car.
2. Listening to music with friends. Not a single one of my friends likes/listens to anything prog. Most of them listen to classic rock, which I like, so its ok. But whenever I go anywhere with my friends, or the come over etc, I put away my prog collection.

I laugh and blast it maniacally in defiance if there's people around who don't like it

Yeah, I basically do the same thing. I think my roommate/dorm hates me whenever I turn on music.

Definately, I was in a car with a friend of mine, I told him I bought an album by porcupine tree, and he asked who was porcupine tree. So I said "pretty much the biggest name in progressive music right now", and him being a pop lover said "I've never heard of them, so they must suck, and flip burgers when they arent on tour". I was furious and got in a major argument with him, where he thought he was right about everything because he listens to mainstream radio! After that car trip i felt very betrayed and misunderstood.

there's a kid at my school who hates PT, so I make fun of him by saying his favorite band, Pearl Jam, sucks. Which it does. A lot. Gotta go for the jugular really

People just hate Prog cuz deep down they realize its more intelligent, so they have to demean it to make themselves feel better about being slaves to music which largely conceived by a bunch of rich white guys in a board room.

I do myself the pleasure of using the portable CD player, so they can look at my creepy looking CD's of my death metal... so they dont see my prog
Actually, I just got in a music theory class, where there is many artistic rock lovers there, and about ninety percent prog! So, I am very lucky to find myself in that position.

I recently found a guy at work who listens to prog. I bought some speakers from him and when I came to pick them up he asked what music I listened to. I cringed as I started to rattle off Mahavishnu Orchestra, Gentle Giant, Zappa, etc. To my amazement he stopped me halfway thru, saying that he loved GG and MO and that he would make me a mix cd to go with the speakers. I sorta stared at him for a second, because I wasn't sure if I had just heard what I wanted to hear or if he had actually just said that. But he came thru with the cd so w00t for me.

I'm an 18 year old college student, and it's really difficult here. A majority of the music scene around here is just bad indie music, it's monotonous and boring. It puts me at odds with alot of the music majors who like obscure music, who can defend their music because of a higher knowledge of theory but wont listen to mine objectively because they don't sing about retarded indie subjects.

There is a small percentage that actually knows what they are doing but, yeah a vast majority that I see are people who play light guitar, and their fans are the opposite of goth metal, plain and boring, I know that it seems ignorant to write off a whole genre, and I'm trying not to but when everyone comes up to you and scolds you because of the fact that your music has distorted guitar, it makes me crazy.

I can relate. I'm a freshman music education major, with some musical knowledge, so for prog some of the time I actually know what is going on, but most of the time I dont, because in the musical realm, I dont know that much. Pretty much everything on my campus is the alternative/indie music scene where we have local bands play that stuff almost every weekend, and so far, none of the other music majors even take prog seriously.
One of my professors, my theory teacher, said that prog is around the level of jazz and classical, as they all roughly used the same ideas.

That's why I jumped back and said that there are some indie bands that do not adhere to the simplicity and monotony of a good chunk of indie music.

Distorted guitar? Think of what people say when I tell them my favorite band doesnt even have a guitar player? (ELP)
I have to say, if some people would honestly give prog a chance, they'd like it. Not all of it, but to some degree. I'm not expecting people after their first listen to start playing live King Crimson albums or something of that nature. Even me, a hardcore prog addict, had to ease himself into KC and Yes and stuff like that.

For me, not really.
I will only play the less accessible stuff through headphones or when noone is around so as not to scare them.
Most of the time more "mainstream" prog like say PT, Tool or Riverside goes down pretty well.
And even if someone catches me blasting something like KC or Yes, they generally think that they are the ones that are missing something, like they have just seen some foreign art film that they don't get.

Have you ever felt alienated or awkward because you like prog?
No. My cousin and brother like to make fun of me just because I listen to prog; well, it doesn't really bother me. I listen to whatever I like. Even tho' I'm practically the only one who listens to prog in the family, sometimes I think I'm the only person who listens to prog in the whole city. Most people I know have extraordinarily "bad" taste in music, ....sorry I don't mean to sound like a snob.

I never thought the indie and skater scenes were that connected. And I'm a huge indie fan. And it's the mainstream alternative kids who love the weed. We indie kids prefer tea
But yeah, a lot of good indie/prog. It's such a wide label that it can apply to anything that there's lots of good stuff to be found.

How can you not at some point feel alienated because you like prog? Prog fans are rare worldwide. What I've come to realize about people who don't listen to music critically (like most prog fans) is that if they perceive something to be socially acceptable, cool, or not a social stretch for them, etc., they will "enjoy" it. If Yes were cool and was played on the radio as much as 50 Cent and Hillary Duff, honestly many people would be convinced it's quality art simply because it's acceptable and their friends are into it. Not only does good music grow on the listener over time, but so does the fact that it inhibits a sense of belonging, as all humans are communal and not hermits in the woods.
But of course if you're a prog fan you're most likely not a victim of this syndrome. In that case you'd enjoy things without thinking about what John Doe thinks about it. The best thing a prog fan can do for the genre is claim pop and rap music is what is unacceptable, especially when you're about 12 minutes into Close To The Edge, and declare pop/rap musical blasphemy. Be persuasive

I don't mind being different . But, if I do find someone who enjoys prog, I do get pretty excited. I do feel alienated sometimes, but I make some fun of it and play along with their jokes.
I think the best reaction I got was when someone took my headphones when Soup, by Can was playing. This person was into hip hop, by the way.

Agreed, Proletariat and chamberry. I know a small number of indie fans like that, but the scene itself can be great and innovative (at least more so than monotonous and boring in my opinion). Its been such a breath of fresh air since I finally moved up to my university and see people going for artistic independent stuff rather than whatever make-up clad whinerockers are on the top 40 today. That's what I could consider monotonous.
I like prog much more, but I'm very happy the indie scene's around and thriving. There's gems (even proggy ones) here and there if you look hard enough and its nice to be able to discuss a great obscure band with someone in real life. The only other prog fan I've ever met was my friend's father who's over 30 years older than me so it tends to get lonely.
Either way, I just personally think that there's no real stereotype for such an eclectic group. That's too bad if those select snobby fans made a bad impression on you, schizoid_man77.

Well I was at a party last friday night near the community college in Fort Worth, TX. Typical party: lots of beer, about 20 people at the max were there. When I walked into the party the owner of the apt. was playing "Rosetta Stoned" by Tool. I thought, "Awesome!" But it wasn't too surprising, as Tool is pretty popular in this area. But, about 30 minutes later, I was in another room with friends enjoying some smoke, and I heard over the speakers a very familiar sound... it was the light jingle of bells... followed by a very scary sounding violin playing in 5/4, later to be accompanied by a metal-edgy guitar and very avant-sounding percussion, which exploded into a meeean sounding death riff....
It was LTA part 1.
I was thinking "what...wait what am i hearing? can this be? who the heck is playing THAT SONG at this party?" I met the guy and we talked about King Crimson for a bit. But I meant to get his number to trade cds, and I didn't. And I'm mad because of it. Could've been a good prog buddy.

Well the same for me...
1) In the beginning when I visited local CD stores I was feeling quite embarassed...now it's ok! I even make fun of anyone who looks at me in a weird way!
2) When chicks look at my discman and ask me the question:"What kind of band is called Yes/Genesis/King Crimson/Van Der Graaf Generator???"
3) When friends come to my house and want to listen to Justin Timberlake/Britney Spiars/greek music...All I have is rock, prog, classical and jazz. When they listen to my CDs they think I come from Jupiter...
P.S: Once upon a time a friend asked me if "Yours is no disgrace"(Yes) is reggae???I couldn't help laughing for a week!!!

No not really. My family jokes about my "weird" taste in music, but it's not bad. I mean when VdGG were touring I was able to go with my dad (he didn't like it too much).
No awkward situations at school have happened because I've already scared people with my music. It wasn't even prog. They decided to listen to my music the one day I brought Merzbow.
Their reaction was hilarious.

I definitely have some awkward moments with my favorite bands. For instance music class, we are supposed to bring in a piece of sheet music to play and I bring in Firth of Fifth.
Last year my classical piano teacher asked me for a CD of songs that influence my piano playing. I included songs such as Close to the Edge, Easy Money, The Barbarian and other comparatively engaging songs, and the next class she had a very incredulous look about her and said "well the CD sure was interesting". But I had told her earlier "you will either absolutely love some of these songs or hate all of them, but as long as you acknowledge the musicianship that's the point of these songs I chose."
However my jazz improvisation teacher, who has been a classical concert pianist since his youth and is a respected member of the jazz community, absolutely loved ELP when I lent him a CD of their music (especially Hoedown and The Barbarian).
All my friends seem to like my music for the most part, and I like theirs for the most part. I suppose I'm lucky.

I never cared what other people thought, even when I was fifteen. But then I never listened to prog ALONE. Now that I'm old enough to be a grandfather (in theory, at least) I roam the record shops with impunity. I guess you should all start looking forward to middle age, which will allow you to listen to ANY MUSIC YOU LIKE - all the time!

I'm not remotely embarassed about listening to prog; in fact, it would be the handful of AOR albums I own that I'd be far more embarassed about than anything related to prog. Music journalists do not make any valid criticisms of the genre anyway; try finding criticisms that don't involve the words/phrases/cliches 'pompous', 'pretentious', 'concept albums', 'keyboard solos that go on for aeons/years' and 'rock dinosaurs'.
I've known some people who have blasted out of hand with barely ever hearing it, really. I was definitely the odd-one out amongst my peers who were mostly into indie. That indie scene didn't really bother me a few years ago, but god alive, it does now, so I've become infamously, equally venomous with my criticisms of it (and deep down, I think some people I know can accept that the indie scene is simply not what it was).
In the UK at least (can't speak for the US scene) it's become ubiquitous, smug and way too complacent for its own good. I've simply not heard a new British band/artist for about 2 or 3 years now that do anything that doesn't sound like The Libertines, Coldplay, Wire, Gang Of Four, The Clash or James Blunt.

I studied at a university for years and we had a janitor, a typical black guy one whose face it was written 50 Cent You can imagine what I was thinking of his musical interests when once, sitting in my office, I was playing "Close to the edge" pretty loud and this janitor opened the door enough to put his head through it and said: "Aaaaah, this is Yeeees". I was sitting stunned as he retreated.

This sounds familliar. I had my RA come to my room as I had KE9 by ELP on and my door was open. He had no idea what it was, but thought it sounded really cool. But the followind day I had on I think King Crimson, and had the people accross the hall complain about it, saying I was playing really weird music too loud. I do kinda understand, as it was Larks Tounges Pts 1 and 2, so I can sympathize, but when they play rap at 11:30 at night, they shouldnt complain.

most of the music I love starts to suck when I try to play it to someone else - the intros suddenly seem too long, there are leaps of faith that the listener doesn't have to make when they listen to pop (ie, foreign languages, strange and extreme tones, speeds and noises) and the sheer length of many prog tracks is offputting to the other person. it'd be unreasonable to subject other people to my idiotic taste. with friends I'll just play some Bjork or something, that's the sort of weird that everyone's already used to. ;P

Absolutely. I've heard a lot of exciting Indie this year, much of whihch I'd rate as highly as the best Prog albums of the year, by bands like The National, The Shins and Of Montreal.

The Clientele and The Twilight Sad both released very good albums this year.
I don't think I'm particularly alienated because I listen to Prog. Granted my friends aren't avid Prog enthusiasts, but they do listen to some Prog bands, mostly Prog Metal like Dream Theater. But then I don't just listen to Prog either, so I find I can find common ground with most fans I music (as opposed to those who treat music like a fashion accessory) be they into Black Metal, Indie, Classic Rock or Electronica.

To each his own. If making more mainstream folk more uncomfortable is your thing...who's going to interfere. Personally, I prefer to listen to most prog & electronic music in private. My wife and most of my students don't have a clue about prog, and that's ok. Instead, I approach it in small steps by sometimes, e.g., starting class by just turning on the PA system and playing one piece that's not too challenging, but definitely different. Usually, I get silent toleration...since they know it's just for a few minutes. But every time, I also get one or two individuals who express curiosity. That's the first step to making converts and broadening the audience base. I just keep encouraging them to explore.

On the contrary. Prog is my shield against the sheep and lemmings that embrace todays popular culture as the substance by which a person is measured. If somebody can't deal with me on the basis of who I am, rather than what I listen too (or other superficialities like the car I drive) than away with thee! Most of my friends don't listen to prog, but they are true friends and we don't pass judgement on one another's tastes.

Hell no!
I'm the bloke who took a Bucks Fizz greatist hits back to HMV and complained to the girl-of-many-peircings at the check-out that it wasn't the original line-up and demanded she replaced it with a CD that contained Cheryl Baker and Mike Nolan immediately (which she did). I've got into lengthy debates why Prince and Marc Bolan are better guitarists than Hendrix and Mark Knopfler (and kept a straight face while my opponent's cycled through every shade of red from crimson through to cerise). I've even argued that The Sweet were heavier than Led Zeppelin without flinching and once told a Black Metal guitarist that his corpse paint made him look like a clown.
So I obviously have a high tolerance to embarrassment when it comes to music and there is nothing in the world of Prog that could ever lead me into an awkward situation that I couldn't bluff & BS my way out of.

Hmm well personally, I think a lot of people into
progressive rock or other more ignored genres should try to be very open about
it like I am. Sure, I still get made fun of once in a while, but due to my laid
back attitude and humorous ways I'm treated as just some strange funny little
guy and left alone :D If everyone is quiet about their music like a lot of
people here seem to be, you’re not really going to find anyone else into the
genre or get somebody into it, however unlikely. When I first met my best
friend a few years back, it took me a long time before I found out he was a
huge Pink Floyd fan. I told him about and gave him cds of various similar
bands, then later branched out into all sorts of interesting music. Today, he's
almost as big of a fan of progressive music as I am and every time I recommend
something he always takes it seriously and gives it another chance even if he doesn't care much for it on first listen.

|
Awkward? Yes. Never alienated. But I purposely avoid that by never talking about music that's too obscure. Which means I'm stuck with Proto-prog, Prog-related, Rush, Mars Volta, and Pink Floyd. It's really hard to talk about prog with folks at my high school, who are typically interested in some combination of hip hop, country, post-grunge, and emo.The exception is one kid who likes Opeth.
And the rest of my musical tastes are even "worse". How the hell am I supposed to explain Philip Glass or John Coltrane to the Average High School Student?

I've never been one to care about what other people think of me either, and I'm proud that I'm a diehard fan of progressive music. I've had my frustrating moments though. I'd always do my part and rip to shreds the sh*t that's on the raidio that my friends and everyone else around me likes, and here's where I'd get the strangest looks. It's like "ohhhh wow, you gotta like this stuff. The reason why it's on the riadio is because it's GOOD". Hah, how blind can they can be! Some of my friends like songs here and there by KC and the more accessible Moody Blues, but I really haven't been able to convert any of them into Prog heads, and I'm just about to give up. It's sad, but simply most people don't look for QUALITY in the music they listen to, and many just derail the purpose of listening to music just so they can appeal to other people etc.
I'm still a kid with a bummy job doing the dishes, but damn have I gotten the reactions out of people when blaring KC's LTIA, Catapilla, Can, Amon Duul II and many others in the kitchen! One of the waitresses just assumed I was some druggie and pulled me aside and asked if I "had any on me" one time. I mean I'm not a perfect, clean-cut angel, but it's rediculous when I've been questioned more than once about drug abuse pretty much because of the impression they get when they hear me listening to this music.

Well, I guess getting into awkward moment comes with the progressive package know matter what. When I say I listen to prog most people say what is that... therefore I know they dont know/care about music too much. I really like it when people ask me what I like and they say "ugghhhh! How can listen to that crap, eighty minuete long songs and fruity musicianship is all prog is"... Usually it's the super metal head that throws these at me. So I destroy his pathetic argument by showing him a Howe solo, or showing him Meshuggah or just out talking him (which I am realy good at)
As for my story earlier, the guy was apop lover who knows nothing about music, so I couldnt throw anything at him say "well, guess who has the money, America makes the best music, and we have the bombs" and stupid crap like that.

Yeah, its not like I'm ashamed of liking prog. But its also not the only genre I listen to either. But sometimes it gets frustrating that no one else I personally know likes prog except my dad, who is the one who got me into it. But sometimes I go farther than what he likes, ie KC or Uriah Heep.
And in reply to the poster above who said because of their music people think they do drugs, I can so relate. When people first meet me they get the impresion of preppy kid who listens to Dave Mathews Band (they're ok) and smokes pot. Then, when they see my music they think hippie kid who smokes pot. But the two stereotypes do make me laugh.
And another story, I was listening to Yessongs in my rooom today with the door open, and Mood for a Day came on and there's this kid down the hall who's a classical guitar performance major, and he came running down the hall and asked me who I was listeining to. And it turns out he really likes Steve Howe's solo guitar albums.

Not awkward, but recently in gym class we were playing volleyball (I suck at gym class and dislike it - typical prog nerd). Anyway, the score was 21 - 12 and when the other team said that I said "ZOMG Rush" and I guess it was pretty loud because a few people reacted and actually got it.
My friends know I'm into geeky music, I went to NYC with friends last weekend and was looking through vinyls (found some good stuff but it was all pretty beat up). Plus I've played Magma and Harmonium for a female friend of mine... didn't go over well
I'm not a fan of driving (18 and don't have a license, enough said), but I have to admit I am looking forward to having prog drive-bys and getting my friends to think I'm weirder than I already am. I've blasted Tago Mago in the car with my mom present, and she actually liked the first half

1976-Anaheim Stadium, California-Yes-top billing. Gentle Giant-opener! Sounds great huh? But sandwiched right dab-in-the-middle is...PETER FRAMPTON (at his solo height I may add)!! There were thousands of young girls waiting for their boy-hero. During the bombastic and intricate fab set by GG, the boppers looked dazed and bewildered, but when PF came on, the girls went wild (wet crotches by the thousands!). To me and my friends who were at this show, this was an awkward moment to be a prog lover. And as soon as PF departed, so did the little girls(Thank you Jesus). FYI: The Yes set was great! And it was the last show I saw with Patrick Moraz still in the band. It was a good night for him as I recall. He performed a kick-ass keyboard solo.

Brit Pop started all that. That was when Indie music ceased to be independent and was homogenised and dished up cold to the mainstream. If an 'Indie band' can fill up arenas then they are doing something wrong.
The indie scene started dying in about 1993/94. At it's tail end, bands like Slowdive, Curve, Cranes, Lush, Cocteau Twins were proudly holding the flag aloft. They all had a unique approach to making music, which I felt was consistent with the 'prog philosophy' Progression in music is now frowned upon.
I think these days I feel at most awkward when my friends are banging on about the 'genius' of the Arctic Monkeys, and I have to bite my tongue and hold back the venom! Generally I dont discuss music with them.

Hmmm... alienated or awkward? Yes to both. A. The alienated feeling - I run a small editorial team for the local magazines in Chiang Mai. The room was quite small and there are four people in there. I have to allow my underlings to put on their poppy music on the loudspeakers, while I sit back at my desk putting on funny headphones that look like Princess Leah's funny bun in the original Star Wars. B. The awkward feeling - Last year at my housewarming party a friend tried to go through my entire collection to play. She really tried a lot of stuff and found no party material AT ALL in my house.
That's all folks!

Not really either has happend to me although none of my friends really listen to prog although they fancy a song or two.
I used to be extremely pissed why people can't appreciate prog music
(which they unfortunately really don't enough). I was so mad about it
and everytime I heard some pop or other stuff I only could think how
much I hated it.
When I hear some mainstream music all I can feel is ignorance and pity.
I have entered in a blissful state where I simply don't care and
through several years of mental practise, under hard circumstances, I
have mastered a mental filter. Most music simply goes in on the other
ear and comes through from the other one. The other feeling which I
feel is pity. All those sheeps and lemmings, as they were appropriately
referred few posts back, walk in the gray mist of inoriginality and
still think thats its something. Let me just say that they miss too
much.
Overall brothers and sisters let me tell you, walk in peaceful proud
ignorance and at max feel pity. Leave other emotions for those who
can't appreciate those who walk outside the wide boring highway of
mainstream. Prog is too special, it will never die, as won't the divine
like originality and creativity in humanity!

To be quite honest, in the past I've always avoided situations that were potentially awkward...I guess not having enough confidence to explain what or why I like what I do; perhaps fearing that others wouldn't be able to understand things a bit on the eccentric side....so I can't say I've had any "awkward" situations.
About feeling "alienated";
There's really no reason to ever feel left out or alone in regards to personal tastes, hobbies, or the like. Your no more different than the next guy from the next guy, I think that some of (us) have a lack of confidence in our social ability to stand by what we like. Perhaps this is why some posters express feelings of superiority (certainly a little tongue-in-cheek but nevertheless true) while some are alienated or uncertain around those who don't understand.
Contrary to the past, I now have no problem standing beside my music and other nerdy hobbies because I know that if someone can't understand why, it's either a fault of mine for not connecting well enough, or most likely a fault of theirs for not trying to be open-minded.

I fall into awkward situations because of my listening habits in general. Since I don't listen to anything recorded by any post-1989 artist, I get the weirdest looks imaginable. Not only that, but people either flinch or laugh after I tell them about my latest purchases. I get some people don't see anything interesting about Argentine progressive rock, Turkish psychedelia or jazz-rock fusion.
Its their loss, in the end.

All my experiences trying to show my brother a good prog band have turned into naught and ruined some chances I have with other people. Now my friends say I have "weird taste" in music and find hard to believe when I like a "normal" band.
Eesh I can't even play Soft Machine - Third because it's "freak out jazz where everyone solos at once"
so I do feel alienated occasionally.
I think the most awkward situation to come out of my love of prog was when I was playing Per Un Amico. My parents were surprised that I listened to good music and told me so.
I told them I already knew that.
Wrong move.

Ha! I've had that happen. Our dorm's Resident Assistant literally knocked at my door to express how shocked he felt about hearing me playing something 'mainstream' (Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now").

Two incidents come to mind:
On a road trip to Florida, we alternated who picked which CDs. The female in the car really wanted to listen to Alanis Morisette. She knew the retaliation would be Ummagumma (geniously for us, we counted double albums as one in the beginning). Suffice it to say that she did not have a fun trip.
Another time I heard some good news and instinctively did Gabriel's old man Musical Box thrust dance. My girlfriend got the reference, but she was way too embarrassed to explain to her friends. I paid for that in full over time...

playing prog to people who don't like it is embarrassing. Recommend it only to people with a taste for the strange, but don't ever play it out loud in company of non-believers.

What's wrong with all you people!?
I live in a country where everything's prog. Over here in discos
you can hear mostly modern prog, Tool and stuff. Older
generations are listening to King Crimison and Procol Harum - mostly in
pubs, while in Italian coffee bars is more more mellow music - Arena,
Pink Floyd and things.
We have two TV and at least four radio musical programs, 90% is
really good rock music from Beach Boys to modern avangarde, no modern
foreign poppy crap.
Pupils from 10-16 are obliged to pass exams of Harmony, Time Signatures
and Synthesis. And I must say it's worth it - all those youngesters and
their demo bands rock !
Actually, I just overheard on the news: our Prime Minister announced
that from the 1st of November, the second official language in country
will be Kobaïan.

I used to use prog as a form of torture when I was at uni, everyone who lived with me knew that if they woke me up when they'd been on a night out that they would be getting VDGG or KC at high volume early in the morning.

My friend says he wants to die He's in a band they sound like Pearl Jam the clothes are all black the music is crap

Porcupine Tree aren't even that far away from modern rock/nu metal anymore, I don't see why someone would recoil from them unless you lied to them and made them think they were prog... or played the early space rock stuff to them, that would be interesting too ;P

Yes, I've had an awkward experience because I was a prog fan.
Once at a crowded dance club, I admitted to someone that I liked ELP's Tarkus. Immediately, the entire club went silent and the music stopped. I was then approached by several burly muscle-bound men who violently lifted me from my table and forced a ballet tutu upon me as well as a tiara, and then threw me out onto the empty dance floor. The deejay then started playing "Tarkus," at which point everyone started to jeer and shout at me "dance to it," "dance to it, geek." Empty pint glasses were hurled at me as well as food and large mucus balls as I attempted to move my body to the ELP groove. Finally as the last chords of "Aquatarkus" echoed throughout the building, I was ejected from the building onto a major thoroughfare, were I was repeatedly taunted and beaten upon by sadistic callous youths with English accents.
I spent the next six months recovering in a wheelchair, and had to be spoon fed my meals by volunteer girl scouts.
Awkward? You better believe it...
