A dork on amazon.com said that Avril Lavigne was more heavy than Iron Maiden and Dream Theater, and that the guitar players on the Avril Lavigne album was better than John Petrucci!

That being said, i know some people that enjoy prog and i have a friend that loves it!

Dude, you need to have "mix of the above."
Of my male friends, some think I'm loony for liking prog, but some love it and dig it when I turn them on.
My wife has a tough time with prog, from Jon Anderson's voice to the general "busyness" of prog, although she had an epiphany when we saw Yes perform Close to the Edge at Red Rocks last year.
Prior girlfriends stayed far away from prog, except for my high school girlfriend, who liked Yes. In fact, Going for the One, specifically Awaken, was the soundtrack to a "major life event" that took place at the age of 17.

I've got four (Dutch) friends who are really into prog. Even though I live in Belgium now, we meet quite a lot, and let each other listen to our newest cd's, and we visit concerts together. Next planned concert with my friends: Van der Graaf in july, yes!!!!!

my group of friends and I are all into the same music. pretty fortunate really, as we get to share music we've found. we also have prog evenings where we chat, drink, smoke with prog playing on the stereo.

I don't think it's much to do with age, Atomic Bomb ... I'm 32 and most
of them haven't got a clue ... when I was 15 I was into early Queen,
Led Zep, Black Sabbath and Uriah Heep ... most of my friends and
classmates were into either Stock, Aitken Waterman, Paula Abdul,
Roxette and even worse, a bunch of hair rock imitators like Bon Jovi,
Guns'N'Roses, Motley Crue, Whitesnake, Poison, etc ... imagine what
it's like being surrounded by people who are convinced hair rock is way
better than Sabbath, Heep and Zeppelin ...
Heep of sh*t, they used to say ... come to think of it, I can't remember why they were my friends

For my friends, I can say a sentence like "Well, the kind of music I like is progressive rock." and they will only understand the words "the" and "rock."
Well, all kidding aside, they aren't stupid. I do have intelligent friends. But they don't know about progressive rock.

Unfortunately I was the type of person to not know what it IS till a couple of weeks ago. Now...I'm hooked. When my mate told me "I believe the best year in the history of music was 1967." all I could do was mock him about wanting to dance with a bunch of short-haired Go-go girls. Now, however, I can see exactly where he's coming from..and all I can say is . I never thought 60s/70s music could be this good, nor did I think thered be anyone from our generation who would still appreciate it. It's so Great!!

my friends think a 5 minute song is long
so i told them the longest song i've heard is Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance at 43 minutes long
they just stared...
(it's either jazz or Metallica or the theme song from "Metal Gear Solid" for them)

Most of my friends are intellectuals like myself, so they listen to a lot of 70s music. Yes and Floyd are really the only prog bands they like, but they are aware of the genre and respect it, though it's not their cup of tea.
------------- And I am not frightened of dying, any time will do, I
don't mind. Why should I be frightened of dying?
There's no reason for it, you've gotta go sometime.
I never said I was frightened of dying.

Each time I try to introduce a prog song to a friend it's the same story... He/She listens for one minute, and with a bored expression, he/she says: "can we put blink 182 or simpleplan"??

My one older brother and his friends were my main influences that got me into Prog. I always loved hard rock - Rush, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Zeppelin - as well as "mainstream" prog like Pink Floyd, ELP, Yes, Genesis (when I say "mainstream" I don't mean it as an insult - means more like radio-friendly and well-known). Then I started liking other bands like Spock's Beard, Marillion, Magellan, Ozric Tentacles, and Dream Theater.
Most of my friends know of prog and respect it, they just don't have the mindset for it.
------------- The more that things change, the more they stay the same.
