I would say keyboard, as Wakeman, Banks and Emerson all payed their dues as great musicians.

Well, I was going to say musical instrument, but I ran out of room, either way drugs isn't much of an instrument.

I'd have to say the keyboard. But that puts a lot of instruments into the category. Moog, Hammond, Mellotron, Organ, harpsichord to start with

Prog is mostly keyboards but the guitar is pretty important too. In my opinion the main instruments should be vocals(more than one vocalist is pretty much standard for harmonies), guitar, bass, drums, and a keyboard player with an army of manuals in front of him!!!! Hammond, moog, mellotron, piano, an an electric piano. Possibly a harpsichord........all that good stuff.

I was supossed to answer keyboards but on the other hand Arsillus got a
strong point. Definition of instrument? Drugs were and are an
instrument to get there and nowhere else.

Nothing screams PROG SONG! like a good flute solo...
--also a hefty bass presence (rush, Yes, ELP, Liquid tension, ...) helps to distinguish the sound. hell, everyone and their mom has keyboard in the band...
