I recently I have become a devoted Yerba Mate drinker. What's your favorite type, and does anyone actually use a gourd? |

LOLWUT? It's mate, not speed. In Brazil there is a huge culture of drinking mate in the state of Rio Grande de Sul. I, personally, don't like it, but I only drank it when I was a kid, so I could change my mind about it if I drink it again nowadays. And IDK how it is in the US, but here it is pretty easy to find it and, though it is considerably more expensive than coffe, it isn't too expensive. -------------

Well you definitely notice a different feeling than coffee. At first you might be shaky, but its generally a lot less so than coffee. It's not like Aderol or something, but it does make you feel more alert. When I have a ton of coffee, sometimes I get a disconnected feeling, but it's a lot less with Mate. And no it's not too expense. The only problem would be that it's hard to find, like I'm not sure that our Trader Joe's even has it, but a small health food store does. On Amazon, the prices range a lot but with shipping you can get a pound for around $10. Oh and a cool part is you use a filter straw called a bombilla to drink it. Some kinds are pretty bitter though, so you can use honey or sugar, but not if you're a man. Only joking. I sometimes do too. |

Please do not take this the wrong way, I for one appreciate different foods, cultures...everything. But that stuff is nasty with a capital N!! It is sooo strong and bitter....aweful! Its probably the one thing I will not drink, of all the countries I have visited. But if you like it then more power to you....I love strong coffee and love tea, trips to China I will drink tea all day long for two weeks.......but yerba mate, not for me thank you very much!

I travel to Uruguay a lot for work and everyone drinks that tea there.......Its like the national drink there. Everyone carrying their thermos with hot water and the cup filled with best described as tea mud and drinking thru the metal straw.Posted By: Atkingani

Mate (yerba mate or erva mate) is a common drink in Brazil: cold, hot, warm, with milk, lemonade, etc. It's sold just like a soft-dink in cans, cups, bottles, in several markets and similar facilities. I love it. What Caio (CCVP) mentioned is the 'toasted mate' (chimarrão) which is tough if you're not used to it. Since my father came from the Southern part of Brazil I'm used to chimarrão since I was a kid and I like it. ------------- Guigo ~~~~~~ |

I drunk a cup of mate tea just once, and I felt that this was enough (about 39 years ago).
Nevertheless I can't say that I really hated it. No vote. -------------

LOL, I didn't knew what kind he was reffering himself to, but I thought it was the chimarrão. But yes, the mate is almost like a soft drink here. You can also drink it hot, but then it is a kind of tea. -------------
