Subject: Autumnal Prog

I'm seeking recommendations for some autumnal themed prog. It doesn't have to be explicitly autumnal in theme, but possibly something that feels autumnal in some way. Ashes are Burning by Renaissance has been my go-to autumn album for the past few years, but now I need something different. Also, I'd prefer the autumnal prog to be somewhat calm and relaxing as opposed to lively and bombastic; I'm considerably melancholic in this beautiful season. I'm looking for no specific sub-genre.

Autumn and fall find me listening to a LOT of PE/Krautrock, though I guess neither of those genres are generally "calm and relaxing" (well, PE may be, but you know more about the genre than I do and it may be a more wintery genre for you) so my suggestions may not be helpful.

PE is the genre I listen to by default and fits all seasons, but I'm generally not feeling spacey and experimental in autumn. But, Cyborg and Irrlicht are great for winter. I think my favorite winter album is probably Phaedra.

Speaking on the folky side of things, you might enjoy some acid folk (Comus, Spirogyra, The Pentangle maybe? Jan Dukes de Grey is a bit too lively maybe...).

I wasn't really a fan of Comus last time I listened to them, but I'll definitely try out some Spirogyra and The Pentangle.

Spirogyra may have similar results to Comus, though their male vocalist is a bit less grating and their female vocalist is Barbara Gaskin. The Pentangle, I'm less familiar with, but they don't have the typical acid-folky male vocalist.

They both seem to be not quite my thing, but listening to them did remind me that I like Woven Hand a lot.

t's a favourite of mine off of one of my favourite albums (Stringtronics - Mindbender).
This is another that is quite autumnal to me:
And this is, at least in part, autumnally beautiful to me:

Proto-Kaw's albums are evocative of autumn for me, as is work by The Decemberists.
Hmm, I'm surprised I haven't considered The Decemberists. I'll give Proto-Kaw a listen to, because their album art somehow reminds me of Thanksgiving.
I'll have to a agree, The Crane Wife is an album that sounds just what you're looking for.

or you could listen to the Dutch band Autumn (not prog, not really sure what to call 'em. Goth Rock?)
Though it sounds like their new album (due out in November) will have some prog elements:
"While AUTUMN's roots remain firmly planted in heavy rock/guitar-oriented soil, their branches are stretching out to more progressive musical genres and alternative approaches to the sound of individual songs."

Disregard the Pentacle suggestion, the band's atrocious. I spent a small fortune when I was younger (about 80, 90 dollars) for that album and absolutelly hated it, as did every member of my family who like progressive rock (four people), so I had to re-sell it for less than one third of what I spent on it.
Do not buy their album.

As mentioned above, The Decemberists' albums all have kind of seasonal things for me.
The Crane Wife is very autumnal IMO and The Hazards of Love is very wintery.

I've always found Ecailles de Lune quite Autumnal. Very peaceful and serene album, with some harsher bits (that work beautifully with the rest of the album).

The latest album, Go Well diamond Heart, is, to me, a return to the feel of The Last Bright Light. You should also try Passengers, which is gloriously pastoral and celtic. Storms over Still Water and Heart Full Of Sky were far heavier albums, and also, IMO, not as good.

Some good suggestions to be sure. I agree with W&W, Tull, and Alcest. I know there is a band out there who did albums titled with the seasons. I think it may have been Poor Genetic Material...but Idk if it envokes a autumnal feel.
My two fall albums are Porcupine Tree's Deadwing and Stupid Dream. Which are probably not exactly what you are looking for.

I'm surprised The Tea Club's first album hasn't been mentioned yet. One track in particular, called "Will O' the Wisp," sounds to me like the epitome of autumn. There's an MP3 sample of it here on PA, if you're interested.
Also worth mentioning is Big Big Train's album Gathering Speed. Here's an excerpt:

yeah and the album it's from. "Hero and Heroine", is like putting Autumn on a platter. No brainer, with chilling songs like "Sad Young Man". Even "Shine on Silver Sun" has a delightful shiver to it, and "Midnight Sun" is another great seasonal tune. Did I mention "Out in the Cold"?
