Sorry, but I neglected to include an "Other" option Tongue  Anyways, I'm into jazz fusion at the moment so I figured I'd make this poll. I'm not voting on this one as I'm still listening and exploring.

Jean Luc Ponty

Mahavishnu are usually annoying. Not much melody going on in their stuff, just alternate noodling between the musicians. As for Holdsworth his sound and playing is pretty boring. Prog is way more enjoyable. Zao are my fave prog fusion band and Ponty my fave straight fusion band Cool

From this list Mahavishnu. But there are too little options and "Other" option is missing, unfortunately. What about Colosseum for example?

I go with MO mainly for the oft maligned Apocalypse.  But if we're talking '70's definitely try Ponty.  Also Bruford's One Of A Kind is really good.

Mahavishnu Orchestra but Larry Coryell and The Eleventh House need to be on that list also.

A tie between Mahavishnu and RtF. What I don't like about Mahavishnu though is that a lot of there sound is constant improvised "shred" noodling which really doesn't appeal to me. Then again they also have some great melodic stuff too, and there are no other fusion albums that can even compare to The Inner Mounting Flame and Birds Of Fire so my vote goes to Mahavishnu.

Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock followed by Weather Report (for I Sing the Body Electric in particular).

A couple of faves in PA's JRF category but not on the list are Eddie Henderson and Julian Priester.

For greatest, I will go with Miles Davis even if Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi group works are so loved by me.

My gut instinct was to vote for Herbie Hancock or Return to Forever, but I decided on Miles Davis after thinking about it for a minute.

**EDIT** Why you have Al Di Meola on the list, and not someone else like Chick Corea, Jan Hammer, or Stanley Clarke confuses me. Al Di Meola is not even a jazz guitarist. Sure he has a few jazz-fusion records, but he does not actually "play" jazz

Very hard choice, since they all wrote great music and all have great albums of the genre. I will go for Miles Davis though, since I consider him the master of all these great musicians.

Sorry again to those who are unhappy with the limited range of options. I planned on including more artists such as Ponty and Corea but I accidentally pressed the enter button too soon when I was making the poll. If someone wants to make a better version of this poll, please do so.

Never really warmed up to MO. I may be getting old, because I only like their "ballads".

These are all big favorites though:

Miles
Herbie
WR
RTF

Same as Logan in preferances and reasons, I guess. Lots of great bands and artists I'd like to see in a fusion poll not included here.

Maybe I should at least rename the thread to "Choose the best fusion artist from the list"? What do you guys think?

Sorry, maybe I came off rude. I don't think there's anything wrong with limiting the options to these, as these are the most progressive and most critically acclaimed of the jazz-fusion bands, at least from the 70s. I was only bugging about ADM, because he is not a jazz guitarist. This poll is fine otherwise.

No, that was fine. I appreciate the feedback. About your concern, I don't really have the musical background to distinguish who is or who isn't a jazz guitarist so I'll take it from you that ADM isn't. But the thing is that he is listed on the site as a "Jazz Rock/Fusion/Progressive Rock artist." If he's categorized as such by the site, then I'll include him. I always go by the site and don't really argue with their categorizations. That's just how I do it. Moreover, it would be unfair to the one person that voted for him if I deleted him from the list now. But I understand where you're coming from.

Al Di Meola made about 3-4 real jazz-fusion albums, most of them from the late 70s, early 80s. He was also part of RTF which was a jazz-fusion band as well. Al also guests on some other albums. Yes, it's true that he worked with many jazz musicians, and definitely has his place when talking about jazz-fusion.

I was specifically talking about his actual playing style, which is not rooted in jazz, but more like flamenco or some other type of Spanish guitar style; and rock/shred style. So what I meant was, if you're going to include Al DiMeola, (and I saw you had Holdsworth in there), at least include another artist like Chick Corea or someone who plays fusion, but also is a jazz player.
Jeff Beck isn't a jazz musician either, but he made 2 of the best 70s jazz-rock albums IMO.

Al De Meola is latin jazz fusion. I don't see any problem in thinking of him as a jazz guitarist. We got lots of jazzrockfusion bands on PA with most of its members not rooted in a jazz with its origins in the american blues tradition. Some music journalists, Wynton Marsalis and other purists will probably claim it isn't jazz too, but I don't care.

^I see your point. The poll is really about rating the jazz fusion artists in terms of their albums/songs as a reflection of their playing ability/style but not their ability/style itself. Thus, for this poll, ADM should only be considered for those 3-4 fusion albums even if he was only a non-jazz player making fusion albums. I should have made that clear. Thanks for the info.

This pretty much.
Mahavishnu Orchestra is a band I´ve never really gotten into as well. Billy Cobham is an out of this world drummer with a technique that makes Gavin Harrison look like Ringo Starr, but he´s never touched me on an emotional level. The same goes for the rest of the band, and I´d much rather listen to Kraan, Etna, Perigeo, Weather Report, Secret Oyster, Sloche, Maneige, Out of Focus and so forth...
Miles for me by miles.

LOL  Not a problem, we know how to take care of ourselves!  Decent selections, actually!

In my opinion, even the very best fusion acts suffered from great inconsistency, both between albums and on tracks within an album.

I hear the complaints about Mahavishnu, for all their greatness, there were a lot of inconsistent moments.  However, considering that they were blazing trails, I forgive them!  Visions of an Emerald Beyond is probably my favorite for brilliance and consistency.

My favorite single fusion band probably remains Brand X.  When Goodsall turns on the after-burners, he's a good as anybody.  Plus, they had Morris Pert and Percy Jones!!

So many choices, so little time.....

Weather Report is still my favorite.  They embodied all the best characteristics of fusion while never being mistaken for anything other than jazz.  After that, Al Di Meola, Allan Holdsworth, (yeah I'm a guitarist), Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever, MIles Davis, Herbie Hancock.  All of these are stellar artists.  Special mention to Jean-Luc Ponty.
