Riverside for me, they appeal to my tastes more these days.

Riverside have an emotion in their music that Dream Theater, for all their stunning musicianship, can never match for me. Mariusz Duda's exceptional voice and Piotr Grudzinski's amazing guitar tone give them a side that DT just don't have.

I just hope the DT haters (who I think can be irrational, as DT are still a good band by comparison with most) don't dominate the poll.

Vote positive.

Hmm, I'm torn on this one, both bands are in my second tier of favorite bands.  I think Riverside gets the edge, but this sounds like a good excuse to listen to both for a few days.

This was a hard one for me, but went with DT mainly for songs like Metropolis, Learning to Live, Scarred, Lines in The Sand and so on... Besides, they had a great comeback with the last album, so that helped a little too...

Riverside by far.  For both music and especiall vocals.  Duda's style appeals to me WAY more than LaBrie.  Plus, I like the guitar and bass work on Riverside's material moreso.

When I listen to these two I hear a cornucopia (Happy ThanksgivingSmile)  of sounds that remind me of prog giants of the past---but I like the Hackett like  guitar on Riverside so I voted for them.

I was afraid this would happen one day. It's like choosing between mom and dad.

A lot of kids here say that dad has become a bit old, stagnant and boring, whereas mom blossoms in creativity, ready to conquer the world with her elegant progressive metal sledgehammer, made in Poland. If only she had as good marketing team and a couple million more die-hard fans...

Well, mom and dad, I will always be there for you both, no matter the outcome of this poll.

Watchtower, Queensryche, Voivod, Fates Warning all spring to mind as bands that did Prog Metal before When Dream and Day Unite was released (we wont even go into the matter of Metallica).

Your second statement is harder to refute though.

Riverside for me! I really like Dream Theater, but they're starting to get a bit paint by numbers lately. IMO they always sound the same(with the exception of Train of Thought that goes ferociously from beginning to end). DT really needs to try different stuff. I think with their talent they could be a killer symphonic prog band.

DT has two great albums, I&W and SFAM, and maybe disc one of 6DOIT, but I actually haven't gotten anything of theirs since ATOT.  Grew out of them maybe?
For Riverside I got ADHD last year, and all the rest this year.  And I love them all!!!

Riverside Motherf*****!!

But seriously - this was tough. I reckon Riverside have fewer quality releases but when they show what they can do (Hybrid TImes, Second Life Syndrome), it reaches higher places than DT.

Ooooooh, I kinda knew this would happen sooner or later Cry , well unless the DT fans come outta the woodwork.
Seriously DT are by miles a more mature band who have a much larger discography behind them. Their influence cannot be argued. I have all of the Riverside albums barring their recent ep and to be quite candid they do not impress me although I do find them pleasant to listen to in much the same way that I enjoyed Louis L'Amour Westerns or James Hadley Chase books once. The problem I have with Riverside is that, to me, they repeat the same formula over and over and over again. Also they get close to being enjoyable to me with all of their releases thus far but close didn't win the cigar - they don't quite summit the mountain and seem to stumble just short of the peak each time.
Oh well - looks like the DT army are possibly going to lose this one to the DT haters.

This is difficult. I feel the relative number of really great albums is much higher in Riverside. The percentage would be something like 75% (like REM less and also love MIMH). Coming up with 3 Dream Theater albums of the same high quality is hard.
On the other hand, Dream Theater is a very important band for me. Probably the first "metal" band I got into. And I feel I should vote for them in defense of all the haters. I'll have to think about this for a while.

On the "renewing their sound" issue: they should've hired Christian Vander instead of Mike Mangini.
And let him write all the lyrics too.

I see comparatively few DT haters compared to the Riverside lovers. ;)

I genuinely hope Riverside win, to be honest. I know they have the smaller back catalogue, but I'm the sort of guy who'd rather see a band release 1 fantastic album as opposed to five good albums.

As a person who voted for Riverside, I don't hate DT. In fact, I've seen them live (opening for Iron Maiden, great show). Riverside just have a fantastic (if smaller) body of work.  The Reality Dream Trilogy is amazing and ADHD hints at a bright future for the Polish proggers.
Im not voting against DT, I'm voting for Riverside.

I don't hate DT. I pretend to to muss up a few feathers, but I genuinely enjoy at least a few of their records. That being said, no DT album hits me like these first two Riverside records.

For Riverside I got ADHD last year, and all the rest this year.  And I love them all!!!
So Riverside it is!

You don't like the 2nd disc of Six Degrees?Confused

Well, If you like I&W and SFAM the most, you'd enjoy their new one

Not necessarily, I love those two albums but the new one is as dull as ditch water IMO.

At first I thought it was amazing, but since then I haven't listened to it in 2 months.

Agreed.

Not really sure. I do like it and I have listened to it quite often (I usually rotate albums a lot). But not a single cord or lyric or whatever sticks. No part of it sticks in my head. I always thought that Systematic Chaos was DT making a parody of DT. If that't the case then aDToE is DT making a muzak version of themselves, or maybe an easy-listening version.
But I still like it.

So this will end on my birthday.

How nice of a present it would be if Dream Theater miraculously came back by the 25th :D

I’m surprised as well. I thought the final round would be DT v. PT or DT v. Marillion. I guess Riverside is more popular than I thought.

Both bands have 3 entries in PA’s top 20 Prog metal albums. One of DT’s is ADTOE. How did that happen?

Only counting Full length studio albums, Riverside has 75% of their discography in the top 20, DT only has 27%.

Recent Music Acquisitions:
Johnny Marr-"The Messenger"
Steven Wilson-"The Raven that Refused to Sing"
Fish-"Sunsets on Empire"
Riverside-"Shrine of New Generation Slaves"

I dont know why your surprised, only last year we had a DT vs Riverside poll which Riverside won, and people are still talking about it.

I'm sorry, but even DT's less than stellar albums have at least a few really great tracks.

Dream Theater are great but Riverside are just amazing. Mariusz Duda's vocals and bass work are just phenomenal. The best Riverside albums are better than the best Dream Theater albums for me.

I'm sorry, but if an album has 2 mildly enjoyable songs on it that doesn't excuse the rest of them being awful

See, now that's your opinion whereas at least 3/4 of DT's songs are objectively bad

Cool

Probably not the best place to be asking this, but does anyone know how to delete images from the file manager? I'm trying to do it so I can update the tournament tree, but it's been imposible so far. I can highlight the files but when I try to delete them, it keeps appearing that bloody "no files selected" sign.

If you use Internet Explorer, I believe that may be the problem.
