Subject: How do I get my GF into prog?
Date Posted: January 18 2012 at 18:10
Apologies if this was asked a million times already..
My girlfriend already has great taste in music - she likes jazz (as do I, we go to jazz clubs a couple of times every month here in NYC), classical and opera. She also likes Pink Floyd. But I want to get her into the real prog - my personal favorites are Genesis, Yes, Camel, Gentle Giant, Anyone's Daughter, Novalis, BDMS, PFM, Eloy, IQ, Synkopy, Phideaux, etc.
I was thinking to start with some jazz fusion - Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report, Brand X, Jean Louis.. but what's next? Any recommendations, anyone here was in a similar situation?
Thanks

Take her to Farfest in October. Give her the chance to see these bands perform live. Pulsar should be there and I believe that has been confirmed. If she takes a liking to Pulsar or other bands of that nature, she might like Eloy. Take her out to dinner on a stormy night and play Eloy in the car. If it fits the atmosphere everything might fall into place for her.

If she's into fusion, I'd go with Metheny's The Way Up first.

Steve Hackett once asked his keyboard player of the day (a certain Julian Colbeck, back in the early 90s) why it was that girls don't like prog. Julian thought carefully for a moment or two, and then replied: "Too many notes..." So I guess that's it, really - too many notes!

You're really lucky to have a GF who already likes great, substantial, and respectable music! I'd say you probably won't have to try too hard... I think the classics would probably do her just fine. You might want to stay clear of anything too heavy-metal sounding though... anything with lush, creative harmonic structure would be fine. Genesis comes to mind, and Mahavishnu Orchestra as you mentioned.

If you get her to like Brand X, you might get her into 70s Genesis (tell her Phil Collins is the same drummer). But, if Brand X doesn't get her groove on, I suggest Return To Forever, "Romantic Warrior." Great fusion (and rock) stuff there!

IMO you shouldn't try it.why?, well because girls like guys to have their own qualities.to my experience never ever explain music to them, never.Just make your ipod a puzzle to her.
In my whole opinion of course.
and and trust me girls aren't a good company in a prog fest.

I knew a girl years ago who listened to King Crimson's Lizard in her car almost everyday. She designed a pair of fangs at the dentist office which was her work place. She would wear the fangs (which were well hidden), drive around listening to prog in the evenings. As she carried on a conversation with you the fangs were hidden. After hours of prog cruise control and Univers Zero she would turn and look at you showing her fangs. It was a bit shocking because it was easy to forget she had them.
A girl I knew who practiced Keith Emerson on the piano all day was a devoted prog fan. My first wife who joined a religious cult listened to Gong and studied the Gong mythology. They all seemed very extreme and the majority of girls I met in my lifetime had no interest in prog at all. I wonder if my point makes any sense to you? If the majority of women are creeped out by U Totem then what does that have to say for the minority of women who do like it ?

If she likes jazz, classical and opera, then maybe try starting her with the prog stuff closest to those - Banco comes to mind, and the big one is fusion. Keep throwing on Miles albums (chicks dig Miles) until you get up to In A Silent Way or even Bitches Brew. See if you can use those as a springboard (hey, if you like this, I have another band that's kind of similar)

What Jazz/Rock fusion you would introduce her to depends on what she likes about Jazz. Pat Metheny might be your best starting place because he has a place in straight Jazz. Question and Answer and Trio 99 are very straight-forward, as is 1978's Pat Metheny Group. Jean-Luc Ponty's Storytelling is also much more straight-forward than his other material. You mention Weather Report. Good idea. Try Return to Forever or some of Al Di Meola's solo work. What about Miles Davis or Herbie Hancock? PFM may also work well. If she likes Pink Floyd, move on to some more Psychadelic/Space rock such as Jade Warrior (who always get one of my highest recommendations) - just be aware they have been very diverse over the years. Above all, let mer make her own choices and do not try to force her to like anything no matter how important it is to you. This will backfire and turn her into a hater. Let her lead the exploration and allow yourself to open to new artists as well. Make it fun and not a task.

If she likes jazz she may be able to appreciate some prog---eventually--but I wouldn't keep my hopes up as I just think guys are more wired to like the stuff---even my sister likes some of it (years of brainwashing from her big brother) but the music is still not a passion for her.

I'd say play some "Close to the Edge" by Yes. I know some people who don't like a lot of progressive rock really enjoy that album. Some "Larks Tongues in Aspic" is great too if she's into very melodic music.

Porcupine Tree's "Even Less" impressed a girl that I was with earlier.
Yeah, you need modern good-looking prog with slick production. Usually work with girls.
And who, male or female, can resist the great ../album.asp?id=7584" rel="nofollow - How to Measure a Planet? And their later trip-hop influenced works such as ../album.asp?id=7587" rel="nofollow - Souvenirs (not much prog in there but a nice way to get people started), work with a lot of girls.

Aw, judging from the title of the thread I came here to advise you how to get you Grand Father into Prog! Oh well...
How to get you Girl Friend into prog eh? Thats harder...
Well my wife liked Camel's Snow Goose but if you want your girl friend in to prog get her into the quieter female lead stuff such as Mostly Autumn or Panic Room...... or Nightwish. actually that's not so quiet....
well get her into Phil Collins Genesis and then slowly pull away the supports till she gets interested in the Gabriel era and then when she hears "Foxtrot" her ears will love her forever.
DO NOT PLAY THE FOLLOWING:
Kayo Dot
Robert Wyatt
Peter Hammill
Can
Faust
Magma
or she may leave you forever...

Lady of the Dancing Water
Book of Saturday
The Night Watch
Prelude: Song of the Gulls
Islands
Exiles
Starless ( a bit more rough - near the end)

Geez. Is it possible for the subject of women to come up on this forum without several members immediately guffing out a load of patronising gender stereotype nonsense? Women are just as capable of digging any kind of music as men are.
Also, to the OP I'd echo what others have said - she already likes jazz and classical so the chances are she's already spent some time developing her tastes. If she hangs around with you long enough then she might acquire a taste for prog, if not it's no biggie. Don't try and "convert" her. That never ends well.

Not quite true, I had a gf and the only prog she really liked was FZ and Jim Morrison ... .She pretended to like Banco and stuff but I knew it was just because of me.It's a horrible thing to convince anyone(not just girls) about music. It's not about "logic".
But the only advice I can tell you is to play your favorite albums for her at times when she's really immersed in your love.It makes her love the music too! (only at those times tho )

And then maybe - just maybe you´ll have widen her musical scope - or heard a lot of: Turn that crazy sh*t off!!!!

I wouldn't bother. I guess it's probably important for her to at least tolerate it, so you can listen to it when she's around, but I've found from my experience that making concrete efforts to convert someone musically usually either doesn't work or makes things awkward. I have a subset of "acceptable" music that I can listen to with my wife, but for the most part I spare her the more complicated and difficult stuff and save that for private listening. I just got tired of hearing, "WHAT are we listening to??" and having to explain it. Sometimes music just has to be background noise. If I'm listening to something, and someone else hears it and doesn't like it, that seems to affect my own enjoyment of it. I have a real strange sense of empathy -- I can "feel" someone not liking it, and I start to see it in a bad light myself. So I just keep it private now, screw other people. Makes for a lonely musical life, surely. Thus my presence on forums like this.

Been there, understand that. I suggest trying not to take your musical tastes so seriously. Whenever someone says that its crap, I think, "Well maybe it it is, but I enjoy it, so who cares if its crap or not?" and go back to my Can, Henry Cow, Zappa, etc. Trust me, it makes you a much happier person.

The first thing to do is get in touch with one of the prog labels (Musea and Inside Out come to mind first, but depending what she's doing AltRock or Cuneiform might work better) and show them her work. If they like it, accept the record contract offer, record her record, and get it out into the world. Next, post some samples and a description of her work in the "suggest new bands" section. The genre teams will handle it from there!

I trick I use on my wife (not really a trick at all) is to write the lyrics down or print them out and have her read them first. This helped when listening to VDGG. At first she would always ask me to turn it to something else, but when I had her read the lyrics, she melted. And now she requests the greatness that is Van Der Graaf Generator all the time.
Also worked with others prog genres, however, she still does not care for Mr.Bungle, and that was actually the one time where she enjoyed the song at first, but when she found out what he was saying, she had nothing of it.

Also worked with others prog genres, however, she still does not care for Mr.Bungle, and that was actually the one time where she enjoyed the song at first, but when she found out what he was saying, she had nothing of it.
"My arm is tired and my...."
Actually, that works with me. I tend to enjoy VdGG more when the lyrics are in front of me. Same with Marillion.

I'm surprised no one got the idea of replying that to this topic these previous days!
