I LOVE Post rock that is VOCAL oriented. Forgive me if I offend anyone. But I was wondering if anybody can recommend any VOCAL oriented post rock albums?

This category seems hit or miss for my personal tastes.

Example. September malevolence has an amazing VOCAL oriented post rock album entitled "after the darkness, there's a next".

Here's a sample:

But everything else by them seems to be primarily instrumental.

Another band I have opened myself to lately a lot is Early Day Miners (Arguably my new favorite band because of their tremendous output).

Sample:

I absolutely LOVE the two albums I have by Raised by swans. Absolutely brilliant, emotional stuff on both albums. Very atmospheric.

And another excellent band all around is Vessels. I prefer this particular album though (White fields and open devices) Because it seems to be at least HALF Vocal oriented. Which is a shame because their vocalist is very nice sounding.

Sample:

So anyway, I really love these bands at their vocal best. Please recommend me similar bands or other vocally oriented post rock (male or female vocals). Thanks.

I hope you know of Sigur Ros?
Silver Mt. Zion - Horses in the Sky, Kollaps Tradixionales
Youth Pictures of Florence Henderson - Youth Pictures of...
Enablers - Blown Realms and Stalled Explosions, End Note
Maudlin of the Well - Part the Second (Edgy Pick but... )

Zilver Mt. Zion Has some nice Ambient sounds going on but I would not define what I am hearing as post rock, so much as minimalist/Ambient/Indi. Not bad but not quite what I am looking for. I prefer something more full sounding and atmospheric, yes melancholy but whilst maintaining some energy. Not bad for what it is though. But lacking in melodics.

Is Sigur Ros really considered post rock? Whatever they are, I have always liked what I heard from them.

Youth Pictures of Florence Henderson sounds good. I like what I am hearing from them so far. I feel like the vocals are against the music almost. But I might be able to get past that with a few more listens. He sounds like he's going for a cross between Black Frances and Wayne Coyne. And I love both the pixies and the Flaming lips. But for my money, I prefer the vocal approach of the other bands I plugged up there. But still not bad. I just wish the vocals didn't sound like an afterthought designed to say "f**k the music, f**k melody". But I shall listen on.

Enablers-I like the music very much. The couple of songs I heard. But what happened to the vocals? Not terrible, but almost, again I feel like they are saying "f**k you" to the music. Most of them are just spoken word. Not bad but I find myself wishing they were sung melodically. But some of them remind me of King Crimson circa 'beat' or three of a perfect pair. I will however listen on to this band to see what else they have to offer. I am just spoilt currently by Early Day miners, Bark Psychosis and the like. But this band is very good.

Maudlin of the Well-I like this the best so far of all you have recommended. Not sure what you mean by 'edgy' but I think they are the most unique and beautiful of all these bands so far. The Atmosphere, the melodics and the vocals all seem to resonate on the same frequency, rather than getting wires crossed in the wrong way. The only problem with this one is that after sampling the album most of it seems instrumental (I've only heard two vocal tracks?). Which is a damned shame because the vocal tracks are beautiful.

Here's another band I recently discovered on CDbaby called The Observatory. The album I downloaded is "Blank Walls". I recommend that one first (unfortunately there are no songs on youtube from that one).

I don't find this particular song as unique as anything on the forementioned album but still good nonetheless.

Maudlin of the Well isn't really a post-rock band, and i wasn't sure if the music what what you were looking for.

Thanks for the detailed explanations and thoughts on my suggestions, it's thoughtful and helps me figure out other suggestions.

Yes Sigur Ros is considered Post-Rock and are highly rated on this forum.

Here is a highlight from Pure Reason Revolution's debut The Dark Third.

Though labelled as Crossover here, they yield some similarities to Raised by Swans in my opinion.
They have that smooth, airy sound mixed with a dark, alternative sound. Mesmerizing vocals and harmonies here too.
Both male and female vocals obviously.

"Post-Rock" is probably more diverse sounding than most think it is. A Silver Mt. Zion is an offshoot of Godspeed You Black Emperor and Sigur Ros are not only considered 'post-rock' but are the most popular PR band in the world. Personally, I never cared for them.LOL

Going by your examples, have you heard the last Mogwai album?

Bullets In Madison may be for you (if you haven't heard them already).

Beautiful. It almost sounds like a Power Metal band without the metal portion. I will keep my ear on this band. Sorry I was referring to pure reason revolution here.

The Mogwai song is good but again here the vocals seem more of an afterthought to add some extra atmospherics, rather than playing an important role with important lyrics.

Affirmative on the Bullets In Madison.

This is somewhat closer to what i'm feeling out in these other bands. Beautiful musical textures. Somber but present vocals with meaningful lyrics and actual vocal melodies instead of just random sounds designed to sound spacey. The question is, is this like one of two vocal songs on an album otherwise populated by 10 or 12 other totally instrumental tracks?

Thanks. I don't mean to sound like a snob about vocals but for some reason Post rock makes the most sense WITH them than without them for my personal tastes. I just sort of tune out when there are no vocals or when the vocals are an after thought. Maybe because I am a poet and lyricist myself. But every time I hear primarily instrumental post rock I find myself saying "THIS NEEDS VOCALS!". With bands like ozric tentacles I don't say that, because I believe their music is geared that way to be primarily instrumental, but instrumental post rock sounds lacking to me. Even though the music is mostly beautiful.

Then i suggest you to continue to listen to Enablers. The power they have in their sound is astonishing.

Look them up on Bandcamp and download the two albums i recommended to you for free. Highly suggested. Or you could just stream them there, though i'm not sure why you would pass on such great post-rock. Wink

I just downloaded the album "we became your family when you died" by Bullets in Madison. next I will check out the Enablers, but if most of their stuff is like the "spoken word" variety where the vocals are more there for an after thought I might actually just save them for certain moods. Because there are indeed times when I am into that sort of stuff. What do you think of september malevolence and Early Day miners?

Like I am listening to The Enablers Album Blown realms and stalled explosions on bandcamp right now and it's frustrating me because the music is so beautiful but the vocals are lazy and anti-Rhythmic and A-melodic. I keep picturing vocals that I could put over this beautiful music that would sound so much f**king better. Like this guys approach to every song is the same. Just reciting poetry over beautiful music, without any concern for how it fits in it seems. I don't want to be listening to bands with "wow I can sing something beautiful over this, what the f**k is this guy doing?" on my mind the whole time.

I'm not sure about the "Vocal Afterthought" criticism, it certainly isn't the case. The poetry is the main focal point imo and really locks in with the beautifully melancholic scene they make. Guess they just aren't for you.

^ That album or any of Swans 90's material has sort of droning vocals combined with precursor Post-Rock and eclectic bag of other genres. Highly recommended. Early Swans material is more No Wave, Post Punkish kind of deal; very different in contrast to the latter days.

Let my make myself clear, I like the instrumentation a lot. I just think the spoken word execution is bland and sounds exactly the same on every track. But I respect your opinion as well.

Edit:

You know it might just be that I am not in the mood at this particular time for spoken word, so my opinion might be based on my current modus operandi. I might be going through a melodic vocal phase again, which I often do as an aspiring musical expressionist myself.

I have heard some of the swans darker output and must say that there is definitely a time and place for it. I am not sure where that time and place is but it might not be far from the nearest psyche clinic. I shall have to give this particular album a listen. One of the things I am searching for is melodics in my post rock. From what I recall Swans were not very melodic. I see certain bands, such as A perfect circle and Deftones as having some qualities of post rock but maintaining them within the setting that it is in (primarily hard rock). The atmosphere, the experimentation and the melodic approach to the music and the vocal melody. Please reference the first post I made on this thread for more.

The Insert Movie Button allows you to just enter the URL for the desired video.
I also believe that the tags work - correct me if i'm wrong.

I'm a tad beginner in post-rock but those bands havent been named, could interest you... maybe not as deep dark and ambient as you wish tho :

ef - 3 albums have some vocals here and there
Immanu El - (I don't really enjoy this one tho... too much christian oriented for me but this is ef's cousin band)
Eksi Ekso - I Am Your b*****d Wings (I love this one a lot)
The Ascent of Everest - From this Vantage (I love this one a lot)
The Appleseed Cast - most of their songs/albums

btw, I really like Youth Pictures too
I will have to look for bands named in this thread, cool. Thumbs Up

Which one of these is the most vocal oriented? I mean I love the music, but as a poet and lyricist I feel this kind of music was made for vocals.

Listening to a song off ascent to everest right now. Beautifully gorgeous.

Edit: Now listening to appleseed cast and downloading The recommended album from The ascent of Everest. I like the appleseed cast a lot too. I might have to grab a few downloads from these guys next.

The latest two (We're Here Because We're Here and Weather Systems) are both incredibly 'atmospheric'. Anathema's almost inventing a new genre (again). Falling Deeper was an orchestral reinterpretation of their death/doom stuff, with new vocals from Lee in there too.

All three are 5 star albums for me. Simple songs brought to life by absolutely stunning production and orchestration. Shows how enough strings can make anything beautiful.

Not really a huge fan of the vocals listed in your band selection, but the instrumentation is fantastic. I really like that SEPTEMBER MANEVOLENCE track, in spite of the vocals. Anyway, to answer your question I think that PORCUPINE TREE's LIGHTBULB SUN album in particular is something you would enjoy. I know they are not POST ROCK, but that album offers up a very similar sound that you love so much. Another album would be THE CURE's DISENTIGRATION and BLOODFLOWERS album(s). These are terrific albums that have strong instrumentals with powerful emotional vocals. Happy listening my friend. Also. Somebody mentioned SIGOR ROS. I think that is an accurate recommendation as well. :)

this is more post metal/shoegaze but its very lyrical  and mellow

Youy might also like the nowegian band Airbag , their music is like a fresh breath of air, thei band name couldnt be mor e suggestive

The vocals are definitely playing the 1st fiddle for this band too

and the last but not least- ( my favorite post... band)-  featurind Katatonia vocalist Jonas Renkse  in the only vocal piece from their amazing album

The new Palms album features Chino from the Deftones and members of Isis. I was in love with it the first time I gave it a listening. Post rock masterpiece.

I really like the Airbag album so far. So much I downloaded it. The singer does remind me a bit of the vocalist of Anathema. The music is more along the lines of Shamrain. But they still sound like themselves fort he most part.

I also like what I have heard of the Eeecocampe (?) so far. I will give the rest of the album a listen. And if it is anywhere near as good as that song it is as good as downloaded.

Beautiful. Are their entire albums vocal oriented or just one or two tracks here and there?

This band is suppose to have the same vocalist as Ghost (B.C) but this band has a more atmospheric post-rock vibe than Ghosts Satanic approach. This is the gorgeous sound of Magna Carta Cartel.

I am glad you two like it. Wink
There's only one instrumental track. There is also a female singer. For me, it is a kind of mix between Sigur Ros and Renaissance. A must !

Nosound (Italy).
It is not pure post-rock (more atmospheric progressive rock), but it is very good. Smile

Sorry, only just been reminded of this thread.

This is fantastic and worth your time (and free download). Vocals sometimes sound like Sigur Ros due to foreign language, but there are some rather heavy moments that sound nothing like them. Overall one of the most unique things I've heard this year.

The new Long Distance Calling also has vocals, but they're basically an Alternative Rock band with post-rock parts now.

No one mentioned Talk Talk and Slint? Sure, they aren't in post/math category on the site, but they are one of the inventors of the genre, with Talk Talk's Spirit of Eden being arguably the first post-rock album. Now, Talk Talk has vocals, but they aren't prominent most of the time (not to say they aren't important, they are for sure). I'd recommend Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock, both are essential post-rock albums.

If you like those, check out Mark Hollis' self-titled solo album.

Slint has more math-rock and post-hardcore influenced, but their album Spiderland is a masterpiece. Here, vocals are much more important and prominent, often narrating a story through a song. Lyrics are spoken, shouted or sung, and you have both clean and fuzzing guitars creating awesome atmospheres. Do listen to Spiderland.

WTF is post rock???  Confused  Is that like when you are dead and you fart from the grave and your hair still grows?

Anyway for an unbelievably incredible vocal recording try:

Marillion - Marbles (2CD set)  That may be the best vocal performance in the last 25 years, regardless of generations or classification.  Its all music right???
