Looking through my vast collection of prog-rock... I feel like something is missing. Sure, most of my collection is within the Archives Top 100, and on many people's favorite album lists, but I feel like there are some lesser-known essential albums that I'm missing out on. Does anybody have suggestions for this type of thing?

Are you wondering what's incredible outside of the PROG ARCHIVES 100? Or the entire website itself?? 💽

I know some great stuff out of the PA 100, but I feel like there's some essential stuff out there that I'm missing, and just can't really find yet on the website.

You should collect Nurse With Wound albums. They are numerous and hard to find.

Also, get The Crazy World of Arthur Brown. A lot of people seem not to know that one.

What's essential for you could differ from what's essential for me, or for anyone other than yourself.  What are some of your favorites from what you do have, so potential posters can be of more appropriate assistance, rather than spouting out personal favorites with no reasoning?

I'll do a favorite from each subgenre, if that'll help.

Canterbury: "Third" by Soft Machine
Crossover: "Grace for Drowning" by Steven Wilson or "OK Computer" by Radiohead
Eclectic: "In The Court of the Crimson King" by King Crimson or "Pawn Hearts" by VdGG
Experimental/Post-Metal: "Lateralus" by Tool or "The Mantle" by Agalloch
Heavy: "Visions" by Haken or "A Farewell to Kings" by Rush
Indo/Raga: I haven't really sampled this one yet.
Jazz Rock/Fusion: "You Are Here... I Am There" by The Keith Tippett Group or "In A Silent Way" by Miles Davis
Krautrock: Haven't really sampled this either, I've heard some stuff by Neu! and Popol Vuh
Neo: "Marbles" by Marillion
Post/Math: "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven" by Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Folk: "Aqualung" by Jethro Tull or "First Utterance" by Comus
Electronic: Not sure, haven't really sampled this one.
Metal: "Black Clouds and Silver Linings" or "Awake" by Dream Theater
Psychedelic/Space: "Meddle" or "Animals" by Pink Floyd
RIO/Avant: "Spillane" by John Zorn
RPI: "Per Un Amico" by PFM
Symphonic: "Bridge Across Forever" by Transatlantic or "Selling England By The Pound" by Genesis
Tech/Extreme: "Morningrise" by Opeth
Zeuhl: I've heard bits and pieces of Magma, but I don't have a favorite yet.

I can offer some assistance in a couple you've not yet explored much, if that would be helpful;
Indo/Raga - the only one I'm familiar with is Natural Elements, by Shakti; if you enjoy John Mclaughlin's guitar work in Mahavishnu Orchestra but wish it was acoustic and in a fused style of jazzy and Indian stylings, you'd likely enjoy it.
Krautrock - I love, love, love a lot of stuff from this genre.  Both you mentioned are great groups, I'd also suggest checking out some Can - Tago Mago is my personal favorite, I'd suggest starting with Ege Bamyasi or Future Days first, though.  Faust is another good one to check out, specifically Faust IV for beginning.  I could go on and on, but I'll stop with those two groups for tonight.
Electronic: Try some of Tangerine Dream's earlier stuff (Phaedra or Rubycon are probably the best starting points) and/or some Klaus Schulze (Timewind, Picture Music, Mirage)
Folk: Spirogyra and Pentangle are suggested based on the like of Comus.  Both are more excellent of almost entirely acoustic prog folk.
RIO/Avant - I'd suggest listening to some Univers Zero, Present, Samla Mammas Manna, etc...I'm more biased than normal in this genre, though. Wink
Zeuhl - if you like what Magma you've heard, consider checking out uhh...Weidorje, maybe, and if you want a more absurd sounding version of Zeuhl, check out Koenjihyakkei (Angherr Shisspa or Nivraym are my two personal favorites of the group's four).

Hope these have been helpful!

Krautrock and Electronic are probably my two favorite subgenres.

As Salty said, you must get some Tangerine Dream, some Kraftwerk (Radioactivity is my favorite) and some Brian Eno (all of the first four vocal albums are five star records for me, and the ambient stuff isn't far behind.) Mirage by Klaus Schulze

As far as Krautrock goes, the first two albums from Faust, Ege Bamyasi from Can, Ash Ra Tempel's self titled debut and maybe some Amon Duul.

From RIO (another favorite genre) be sure you are listening to Captain Beefheart. Trout Mask Replica is his most popular, but can be a bit impenetrable, so Safe As Milk or Mirror Man are easier to get into.

Judging by your tastes, you'd probably love maudlin of the Well; they're material is essential, in my opinion.  Just don't start with their debut, as it's not quite as good as their later masterpieces.

Hi,

I rarely go by the public tastes ... pretty much on purpose!

The "public" taste, as evidenced here, is almost all in the same format or sound, and many times it is just a variation upon a theme and not that original at all.

All in all look for the bottom 1000 (instead of top ten, or bottom ten) and then make a call on the reality if something is interesting or not.

But there are far better ways to find out something about music, than a list ... I personally like the connections to other arts, and if you do not know the connection between Alan Ginsberg, Edgar Burroughs, Kevin Ayers, Robert Wyatt, Daevid Allen, Gilly Smith, Syd Barrett and then some ... you are missing out on a history that defines a lot of things, up to and including Daevid and Robert STILL being the "beat poets" they started out with! But this is a rockband board ... so saying things like this is strange and everyone goes left and leaves the room to go smoke some joints instead of checking out some real dope!

There are a couple of other scenes that are important.

I think the "krautrock" is massive, though it has a tendency to ignore the fact that Guru Guru was very political on stage with humor, instead of being insulting to anyone, that Amon Duul 2 was involved in rather important and huge scenes with communes, one of which had an arsonist that became famous, because his mistress went out and took off with Keith and Mick ... and then the connection between many of these musicians with playwrights and film makers ... and then some ... which gives the music a little more shine and also shows them better. Also important here is the connection to the famous music schools, that had world-wide known composers for instructors ... but screw it ... prog would never consider that these people knew music and then some!

In America, there are just as many scenes as all of Europe, since NY, LA and SF were totally different. LA had a very vibrant arts community and many of them came big in film, theater and then club ... when some music went viral with naked bodies and it made 3 hits on the radio by 2 separate bands copying it. And of course, discussing NY and saying there was no music around Andy Warhol, means that you had no ears!

And then ... if you feel like it ... you might check out Tokyo, Rio, Mexico City, Rome, Madrid ... and if you don't get tired, there is always Sweden, Finland ... and by all measures, do not limit yourself to "progressive" or "prog" because you will also miss some outstanding jazz'y stuff!

So ... let's see ... you want hits? Stick to top ten, then! It's better for you and your friends will agree with you!

-------------
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

For the Indo Prog section I suggest checking out Shakti's Natural Elements or a Remember Shakti live album. Also look into some Ananda Shankar. Some other over looked masterpieces: Diagonal's self titled debut, Taal's Skymind, Reign of Kindo's Rhythm Chord and Melody, Distorted Harmony's Utopia, Cathedral's Stained Glass Stories, and Mirthrandir's For You the Old Women.

To be fully honest, that was my least favorite Floyd record. It had like one or two good moments, but that was it.

As for everyone else:

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll definitely check out Khan's "Space Shanty". I've heard "Doomsday Afternoon" and a lot of GSY!BE's material, but I'm glad they were suggested because they are EXCELLENT. Thanks again!

Seconded. Seems to get quite a bit of mention on this site and with good reason. Superb math with post rock and jazz influences (or post rock with math and jazz ...). Can't believe this band didn't get a proper release. Their EPs are worth having (again for free) too.

Hey man 👊. I gotta say that A MOMENTARY LAPSE OF REASON is a much better album that they did in the 80's. The FINAL CUT just doesn't cut it. Actually my least favourite as well. Anyway listen to that album. It's very good and extremely underated 👌

I feel it had Roger at his most impacting, lyrically. There may've been more subtlety to Animals, but how can you beat "And as the windshield melts, my tears evaporate/leaving only charcoal to defend/Finally, I understand the feelings of the few - ashes and diamonds, foe and friend, we were all equal in the end"?

Thinking about SAVIOUR MACHINE in the Gothic/Progressive metal genre I think they really don't have much notoriety. I mean nobody that I know personally has heard of SAVIOUR MACHINE. I think this is a real shame. I recommend this lovely band to anyone. The LEGEND series that they made I would most definately list as essential prog. Songs like THE LAMB, THE PROMISE, ANTICHRIST PT 1, THE NIGHT and 1260 DAYS should not be ever overlooked even by the most decerning progger. Please enjoy.

Maybe some of these albums are not ESSENTIALS, but I make you sure that these are all great works.

Brother Ape - Shangri-La (one of the most beautiful albums from the new millennium)
Locanda delle Fate - Forse le Lucciole non si Amano pił (probably the best album to come from Italy, but I think I am the only one to say this :P)
Martin Orford - The Old Road (better than everything IQ ever did)
Hostsonaten - Springsong (incredibly sweet New Age album that almost reaches the peaks of Mike Oldfield's Ommadawn in some moments)
Odessa - The Final Day/Il Giorno del Giudizio (vaguely Area-inspired, great work that shows the good health of Italian Progressive in the last years)
Ad Infinitum - Ad Infinitum (fantastic Yes-inspired New Prog album, one of my personal favourites from the '90s)

Hope it is helpful ;)

Does anybody have suggestions for this type of thing?

You might find it useful to check out some of the individual sub genre top 100's rather than the overall top 100. Take RPI for instance, there's tons of great stuff there that's hardly known by anyone who doesn't make a concious effort to investigate the genre. Here's a few bands I'd recommend as an early port of call....

Biglietto Per L'Inferno
Area
Maxophone
Il Rovescio Della Medaglia
Banco
Le Orme
Quella Vecchia Locanda
Il Bacio Della Medusa  (one of the best newer bands) as are
La Maschera Di Cera

and I could list loads more. Good luck in finding something you like.

Incredible album! Even if my favourite is Unquestionable Presence... And, about the whole genre, I think that this is the very best:

Such a great album too... Thumbs Up Death's later work (as well as the early stuff, though it wasn't very prog) was also incredible. Cynic must not be forgotten either Bowdown

I have a Saviour Machine album...Legend III:I

It's not bad, but I wish it had more shreddy riffing in it...alot of the songs are kinda at the same pace, and not enough mixing it up as far as riffs go, if you know what I mean. (no, I'm not saying the songs sound the same, it's just they needed more musicianship added to make them more interesting, imo)

Singer has a great, distinctive voice though, kinda Geoff Tate-meets-David Bowie kinda thing...

At the Gates - The Red in the Sky is Ours

Don't even think about anything else this band has ever made. This album has nothing to do with any of that and everything to do with being one of the most overlooked technical/progressive death metal marvels in existence.

very cool man. Legend 3:1 is great, but yeah that particular part to the trilogy SM really scaled back the guitars big time and went with more orchestration formats with choir as well. I think you should give Legend part 1 a spin. The track, THE SWORD OF ISLAM has one of thee most haunting guitar riffs you've ever heard. It's awesome. Think you will really appreciate that. Also. SM's very first album is an incredible gem with a more guitar based sound. Pick up SAVIOUR MACHINE 1
