I assume that the inclusion of "21st Century Schizoid Man" would significantly affect the results of this poll because it is probably the best opener of all openers ever.
I've included here the most famous Classic Prog artists (Symphonic, Electronic, Prog Folk, Eclectic, Heavy, RIO/Avant, Canterbury, Psych/Space, Jazzrock/Fusion, Neo, Zeuhl) with their debut before 1990, but predominantly in the 70's.

Script from this list, and Schizoid wouldn't have changed that.

I'm going with Return To Forever from this list, such an incredible atmosphere and some top notch playing, I guess it's my favorite song by the band too.
ELP would be my second choise here followed by Giant.

Going to have to go with Script, although Kings and Queens is a very close runner-up.

And it gets my vote. Few seconds and it's already a mindblower with that sort of Morse code, then Barrett sings things like "Oberon there on the run" or "Floating down the sound resounds around the icy waters underground"....Words which have a bit of sense and a so particular sound. A masterpiece for me.

I'm going for Kings and Queens. The first incarnation of Renaissance made some great music, both as Renaissance mk1 and Illusion.

The Barbarian. Absolutely wonderful track, and interesting to see that Emerson took so much of Bartok's Allegro Barbaro for The Barbarian, more than from Janacek's Sinfonietta for Knife Edge.

I voted other. I've always considered Introduzione and Impressioni di Settembre as one song - hell it's the same chords and melody and there's nothing distinguishing them apart. Anyway that start to PFM's career is one of sheer and utter musical bliss. I love that song.

From the list, Astronomy Domine' -- it set the agenda for the next few Floyd albums to follow, up until, oh, Animals I guess.
From outside this list, maybe "Father Cannot Yell", one of my favorite CAN songs and a great opening for their debut.
Or perhaps "Wild and Exciting" from Earth and Fire's debut. Still one of their best songs ever.
"Marathon" from Kayo Dot, perhaps? Talk about a mindblower. It's probably outside of the chronological scope of this poll, but I'll mention it anyway just to see the Kayo Dot fans drool.
Maybe "Solar Musick Suite" by Steve Hillage - the opener from Fish Rising, and possibly his definitive song.
