other: Vektor: Black Future (or Outer Isolation). Because it's futuristic, extremely aggressive, violent and lightning fast but still everchanging, creative, hypercomplex and somewhat intelligent. Its the only progmetal I know that pleases me the way early Sadus does. This meaning: I'm not here on the PA-boards for the proggy metal. Most of the time I loathe it. I just happened to stumble over Vektor elsewhere and they reminded me of all the real, but kind of technical metal I once loved (and still do it seems). OK so I like some selected Voivod as well.

Throw in a couple of Threshold, Vanden Plas, Savatage and To Mera albums and I'm more-or-less happy with the list, I'd put Pain Of Salvation above Dream Theater and include "Be" but that's being picky.

I don't really get putting up a post on a forum about one genre (like this prog metal forum) that focuses on music that is generally regarded as not being in that genre.  Sorry, that was a really wordy way of saying "stay on topic".  That being said, for now I go with DT's best - Awake, Images and Words, and Six Degrees.

I mostly listen to stuff like Alcest, Neurosis, Shining, Arcturus, Ulver, shels, and the more droning and psychedelic kind like OM, Sleep and Boris.

Out of the ones listed I only much like Operation: Mindcrime.  This is a good representation of my prog metal tastes, though:

Ermm don't we (here at PA) file most of those under the two other Metal categories of Experimental/Post and Tech/Extreme (too lazy to check but they don't strike me as Prog Metal)

His question says progressive metal and those are all metal that is progressive.  Close enough.

Better answer than "lol none of that crap" for fostering discussion, isn't it?

Sure, but when you include artists from those other two "prog" Metal categories much of this pales into insignificance by comparison, aside from Pain of Salvation none of these (Traditional) Prog Metal artists would be in my Top 20.

LOL no offence intended - I had been tempted to list Opeth and In The Woods... albums before it clicked that neither of them were in Prog Metal, (and I'd forgotten that Neurosis has been moved out of Post Rock years ago).

Cheers mate.

It's been so long since I last listened to metal on a regular basis anyway, so I'm glad I getting back into it any way I can. Great work out music too, especially when I do it alone and am able to zoom everything out except for the music and my breathing. Through Silver In Blood is perfect for this. Feels like Yoga.

Alrighty then I will leave you guys to it *grabs sea shells and coat*

The Perfect Element for me. Funnily enough, despite my propensity for Experimental/Post it would still be TPE if you included the other 2 subs, though like others most of what comes under Progressive Metal wouldn't stand a chance against the variety of other bands.

I think they fit there ok (well, better than the other subs) but tech/extreme could be an option too, at least for their earlier works.

O:M gets my vote, even if it is not as "prog" for many compared to the others in the list.

I don't like to limit my favourites in one metal genre (progressive) because my top would be the latest Leprous and Unexpect, after the test of time and because my favourites change each year. My past best metal prog was DT Scenes from a Memory, but today i prefer the two latest from Haken. I would also place in my top a bunch of Pain of Salvation albums. As you see i don't have any obscure prog metal bands as my fav to impress the gallery of pure metal fans who can learn someone to discover a band.

Well here's something I've noticed, most people around here thinks like you do and prefer the second era of the band (Mabool...), but fans that were there right from the start thinks that Sahara is one of a kind. There's always a moment in their shows where people are shouting "Old songs". Of course later albums are more mature and as priceless. Fan boy Approve

Youi have the advantage on me... I've never seen them live and had never heard of them until El Norra Alila was released, Sahara was a much later (almost retrospective) purchase. It was a long wait for a follow up to El Norra but Mabool proved to be well worth the wait. A great band. Approve

With the exception of Distorted Harmony's "Utopia" (Wink to Sagi again) there aren't many that have shaken the PM grounds (that is PM exc'. Exp/Post and Tech/Extreme as defined here). Maybe this is the reason?

Well I think it's beyond that. A poll I could make on any style of prog metal used to garner at least a decent amount of attention and maybe 2 pages worth of discussion 5 years ago. Today the same poll would be lucky to get 5 replies, it's like people aren't happy with bands churning out the same old stuff but arent willing to explore other bands that are producing good new music. Haken seem to be the only recent metal band that everyone seems to want to know, which is a bit of a travesty since as good as they are, sister band To-Mera are far more unusual and interesting yet can't get the interest for some reason.

Out of those, Operation: Mindcrime and then Images & Words. My top 10 (limiting to one per band):

1. Christ 0 - Vanden Plas
2. Operation: Mindcrime - Queensryche
3. Sympathetic Resonance - Arch / Matheos
4. Train of Thought - Dream Theater
5. The Art of Navigating By the Stars - Sieges Even
6. El Nino - Eldritch
7. Room V - Shadow Gallery
8. Visions - Haken
9. Celestial Entrance - Pagan's Mind
10. Shine of New Generation Slaves - Riverside

Honorable mention to Seventh Wonder, Voyager, and not-quite-metal prog bands like A.C.T and Enchant (actually, even the last Riverside album is slightly pushing it).

Having trouble venturing into "Progmetal", and I'm not too high on metal, for that matter (I'm into prog!). But it appears this offshoot of prog is gaining quite a following, so the question is: What is THE one progmetal album that exemplifies the subgenre the most and could be used a starter kit for anyone looking to get turned on to it completely.
