4 stars Scheherazade and Other Stories, along with Turn of the Cards is my 'Renaissance most played' and probably is the group at the top of their game.

Side One consists of three great tracks, of which Vultures Fly High is the most dramatic and most-likely in the radio playlist stakes (it also comes across well on the BBC Sessions Live recordings). Trip to the Fair and Ocean Gypsy also highlight Annie Haslam's awesome singing voice with the much vaunted 5 octave range. As a set of music it captures the best of symphonic prog (for me anyways); not too overblown and remembering what its really there for; rock.

Side Two is the Song Of Scheherazade; a 25 minute tale in a number of parts. You have to admire the composition, the changes of mood and the power that comes through on this recording 33 years later. Through out it, you get dragged along on a wave of emotions, drawn deeper into the structure, feeling and the story being told. Awesome stuff.

Renaissance are a band who despite later criminal activities in the pop world of the 80's, were a leading light of the 70's prog scene in the UK.
