4 stars Though this album is possibly the only essential release from JETHRO TULL's catalogue, I feel I must give it only 4 stars. The album is wonderful, and I have loved it since I purchased it, but it's lacking some essential prog rock creativity. Don't get me wrong, many of the passages are lovely, the playing is all where it needs to be, and Ian Anderson's lyrics are a perfect accompaniment to the music (and let's not forget: they very well might be the most easily memorized of the lyrics to these long suites. Lord knows the lyrics to "Close to the Edge" are about as clear as radio static), but the album, as a whole, lacks a certain boldness with the arrangements. Compared to a piece like "Supper's Ready," "Tarkus," or "Close to the Edge," the music on this album seems to play it safe by sticking to often times basic song structure, repeating riffs and passages in groups of four and hardly breaking from the rather sparse instrumental palette. Nonetheless, the album is *near* perfect, and TULL got it right the second time around with "A Passion Play." And, yes, I am ready to be ransacked for that last sentence.
