5 stars In my opinion, Camel is much closer to the Canterbury Scene in sound and spirit than it is to Symphonic prog. And if there is an album that highlights this is The Snow Goose (which due to the pettiness of the short story's author had to be officially titled "Music inspired by..."). You would think the opposite, given that here by necessity they sound more 'symphonic', yet in a very subtle and inspired. But this whimsy and quirkiness is in my view unparalleled in Prog except in the Canterbury bands.

This is an album that should be heard in its entirety, and the experience is not the same if we take each track separately. It's a classic example of the whole being more than the sum of its parts. There are many small movements as well as more developed jams, but all of them beautiful, timely and haunting in a way.

You can find here the classic Camel sound, but more refined and structured, more 'classical' as well as fully instrumental (voices can be heard, but they are used as just another instrument and no lyrics are sung).

Truly a masterpiece but perhaps not the perfect place to start for a Camel ride. For me, it's their best album and I have lisen to it multiple times without ever tiring. If Prog Rock was the atempt to elevate rock to new hights, this is as good example of that as you will get.
