4 stars I wanna rule the world

Even though "How Dare You!" continued to show the two writing teams pulling in different directions with Godley/Creme wanting to go get closer pure art rock and Stewart/Gouldman wanting to produce straightforward pop rock they still managed to produce an excellent album and certainly far more consistently enjoyable than the frankly overrated "Original Soundtrack".

The album is largely dominated by Godley and Creme's artier ambitions such as the melodramatic "Don't Hang Up" and the rather cool opening title track full of guitar and keyboard interplay. "I wanna Rule The World" is genuinely funny and similar to the sort of comedy song the Bonzo Doo Da Band did in the 60's."Iceberg" is one of their more successful parody songs, this time sounding like a 40's jazz number but with plenty of their trademark twists and turns along with witty wordplay.

However as with their previous album my favorite tracks are the one's penned by Stewart and Gouldman. "Art For Art's Sake" is an absolute cracker with a spacey Floyd-like intro and a distinctively heavy riff, catchy chorus and plenty of musical development in the middle eight."I'm Mandy Fly Me" is even better with a very simple but effective guitar riff in the chorus. They even manage two guitar solos in the middle eight. The cryptic lyrics are extremely clever about a man who recalls surviving a plane crash and being rescued by a stewardess named Mandy- or did he imagine the whole thing? The song also references an earlier song "Clockwork Creep" about a bomb on a plane from the "Sheet Music" album suggesting a sequel of sorts.Truly one of their greatest ever songs.

Overall this is a fairly solid well produced album.Four stars.
