3 stars I have always regarded ELO as an overbloated disco/pop band. But this album, ELO's debut album has gone a long way to change my views about this band.

This album and ELO's career starts with the rather good 10538 Overture. The Byrds is a good comparison here. After some minutes and on the rest of the albums, strong influences from The Beatles (aka the Eleanor Rigby song) and Neil Young comes to the fore. The Moody Blues is also a good reference point.

My main gripe is the muddy sound. A remastering or a remix would had been a good idea. The strong points is the use of instruments here. The cello is excellent. So is the dynamic between Roy Wood's eccentric compostitions and Jeff Lynne's pop songs. This album is pretty much a pop album aka the Sgt Peppers era from The Beatles......... with some prog and avant-garde influences added. Sadly, this is the only ELO album featuring the work of both Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood. This album has improved ELO's standings in my view and I really like it. It is neither brilliant or very good. But it is still a good album worth checking out.
