3 stars As accessible as Patience was, as raw and frightening this live album is. It's a harsh testimony of the energy that ran through the K Group. But it's not an easy listen, just like any other VDGG of Hammill live album.

First of all, the sound isn't all that great. Especially the drums are frustratingly low in the mix and have that typical cardboard quality of many bad recordings. Another strange feature of this album is that all applause is mixed out. It gives this live album a very barren and desolate feel. Add a stark black & white picture of a roaring Hammill to that and fans know they're in for a treat. To other people it screams 'Keep Out!'

The track list consists of a selection from the preceding 6 albums. While they do not differ all that much musically, they sure sound and feel completely different. If you liked some of the music on Hammill's early 80's albums but thought it was all a bit too polished then you need to pick up this one. Just like any other Hammill live performance this is all about pure remorseless intensity. The CD issue adds an extra album of the same austere energy.

If you expect this to be Hammill's answer to Gabriel's Plays Live, you might consider listening to it first before heading into a blind purchase. I remember the feeling of disappointment this album gave me when I initially bought the LP, but in the end I bought the CD as well.. It's a diamond in the rough. Essential for fans.
