4 stars Many know great jazz fusion guitarist Al Di Meola by his electric guitar attacks on Return To Forever albums, plus possibly some his early (electric) solo albums. Some still remember his excellent acoustic guitar trio collaboration with McLaughlin and De Lucia ("Friday Night In San Francisco").

Later ADM became more interested in his world acoustic works ( many of them are interesting as well, but for a bit different listener, possibly).

With one of his most fresh albums, "Diabolic Inventions..." Al Di Meola offered great music of tango-nuevo creator Astor Piazzola played alone ,just acoustic guitar. And it is a perfect album! ( If you can afford acoustic guitar music at all).

Al Di Meola from very early years was approved speed-fingers guitar master, well- known by his great technique. But his main problem (especially playing electric guitar) was cold, almost mechanically calculated sound. He hardly solved this problem even when plays acoustic. But this album is a rare exception - sound there is softer and warmer then ever. Possibly, the reason is hot Latin -tango influenced music itself. But the result is very attractive. Great songs , acoustic atmosphere of Mediterranean (or better - Latin American) evening - I believe this is one of his great acoustic albums!
