4 stars Black metal played in the vein of Opeth

Shining continues to develop their unique mixture of black metal, melancholy and suicidal lyrics. Although Shining isn't influenced much from 70's progressive rock, they certainly hold certain features that could be compared to Opeth. The melancholic melodies are sung with a rare passion from lead singer and primus motor Kvarforth. Also, the mixture of quiet parts and black metal riffing is intertwined in a very good way, making all the songs drift between melancholy and insanity. The inasnity is mainly caused my the manical singing style of Kvarforth, but a interesting metal riff is never far away.

And this is what makes this album a bit better than the previous ones. On the first three albums the riffing comes out as inspired by traditional old school black metal. On The Eerie Cold the riffing seems more original and also more progressive. Especially the interaction between drums and guitar makes The Eerie Cold come out as way more groovy than its predecessors. Without a doubt, the musical performances on this album is turned up a notch, as well as the production.

The feel of this album is definitly unique, but one does of course have to appriciate a certain morbid, suicidal melancholy, as well in the over all mood as in the lyrics.

That aside, this album has nothing but good melodies and riffs. Give it a few spins, and once its under your skin, you won't grow tired of it for a long while.

Ps: Mark the pretty hilarious monologue by Kvarforth opening the first track of the album.
