THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION: CRUISING WITH RUBEN & THE JETS

(Considering this an album by THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION and not a Frank ZAPPA album)

"Cruisin' with Ruben & The Jets" is probably the album I like the less in the whole THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION catalog: the excellent and very interesting highly experimental style that THE MOTHERS achieved in the three previous albums ("Freak out!", "Absolutely free" and "We're only in it for the money") went completely down the drain with this boring, monotonal and with a huge lack of creativity record.

The songs in here are an ugly attempt to sound exactly like a 50's Rockabilly band, the instrumentation didn't show any interesting moments, the guitar is asleep, the drums are dry and the bass is as much recognizable, there is not even a single song in here that made further than the album: everything in here is forgettable, if I wasn't listening to the album right now I couldn't remember any of the songs in it.

However, this is not an awful album: actually, if I was as interested in Rockabilly music in the vein of Jerry LEE LEWIS, Johnny CASH, or Elvis PRESLEY as much as I'm interested in Progressive Rock I would enjoy this album much more, maybe if it wasn't an album by THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION I would love it, but the problem here is when I start to compare this record with any other MOTHERS or single ZAPPA album, that's where this album feels poor and not interesting at all.

Collector/fans only, that's the best I can do.
