3 stars Jethro Tull is taking shape on Benefit.

I will be brief....

This may be their first album with the now trademark Jethro Tull sound. Which means a mix of folk rock, symphonic prog and blues. There is not enough symphonic prog here to bother the ELP/Genesis fanatics, including myself, but the real Jethro Tull is coming through here.

I am not a fan of blues and there is too much blues here for my liking. The music is also pretty harsh on this album. This album is bordering to hard rock at times. This album seems a bit underdeveloped in my view. But the songs are good. They are not great in my view. Inside is a great song. The same can be said about Teacher. The rest is good and this is a solid Jethro Tull album where the band is taking shape. This is a good, but not a great Jethro Tull album. My interest in this band is focused more on their Thick As A Brick like work instead of their harsher songs like those on Benefit. Hence three stars.
