2 stars If there needed to be a definition of a throwaway release then the Animal Chin EP would definitely be it!

Released as a bridge between the band's two full length releases this EP features three tracks from the acclaimed 2001 release A Livingroom Hush, one track off its follow up The Stix plus a few surprises towards the end. At first glance everything seems to be hunky dory with the track listing and all of the previously released tracks do sound identical to their original sources. Instead it's the bonus material that takes away much more than what it adds.

The three new tracks towards the end of the EP take up more space than everything that came before it so far. Tristar starts things off with a very pleasant groovy beat that I haven't yet heard on any of the previous Jaga Jazzist releases but the overall quality of the composition isn't all the spectacular. The final two tracks are remixes of Lithuania and Going Down off A Livingroom Hush. The former is shortened down considerably in length and the new electronic beat does everything but enhance the experience for me. The latter is a pretty lousy remix of an excellent original that just isn't worth wasting 16 minutes(!) of your time on.

Even though I originally intended to give this release the low rating it actually deserves, the guidelines seem to suggest that the collectors/fans only rating would be more appropriate seeing that Tristar might still make the EP worth a while for fans of the band to spend their money on. I urge everyone else to stay away from this EP and instead go for any of the band's excellent full length releases.
