MEKONG DELTA

Back in those days, the identities of the musicians was concealed due to them being signed on other labels. A bit of a strange claim, but I believe it is true due to Rage, where you normally found the members of Mekong Delta, being signed on Noise. That label is pretty well known as having some difficult contracts. I refer to Tom G. Warrior's excellent book on this subject.

Anyway, Aaarrrrg Records gave us this, the debut album of Mekong Delta. It is a debut album mired in the 1980's thrash metal scene. The German thrash metal scene, that is. The vocals are pretty much from the speed metal scene. The rest of the music is somewhere between thrash, speed and heavy metal. Mostly speed metal with some clear references to the likes of Vendetta, Scanner and Rage. But Mekong Delta was already venturing out on their own with this album. Not with great musical success, it has to be said. The album is just totally all over the place with avant-garde elements, speed metal, humour and heavy metal pieces thrown together in a non-logical way. To a certain extent, this philosophy of this album reminds me a lot about Gong and the more loony moments of the Canterbury scene. But the music here is metal and metal all over again.

The quality is not particular high. But songs like Black Sabbath and the opener Without Honour is good. The rest is best forgotten. But it still gives me a great appetite for the rest of the Mekong Delta albums.
