2 stars Well, we all had to start somewhere. In the case of one of the biggest icons in the pop/rock world, the start was a naive, charming album.

I had expected a worse album than this, due to it's reputation. This album is also regarded as David Bowie's false start. His Space Oddity album is regarded as the real debut of this cultural icon. So, what we have here is an earthbound oddity of an album. You got this joke, huh ?

The opener Uncle Arthur kind of sums up this album. A folk hall inspired song which Morecambe & Wise could implement in one of their comic routines if they wanted. This is folk music and cabaret into one. This despite of some quite serious lyrics. Short, sweet and pretty good. The music on this album is pretty basic and based around David Bowie's already excellent voice. Actually, while writing this review, it dawns on me that the music on this album is pretty similar to what The Beatles did on some of their more simple songs after Rubber Soul. The difference is David Bowie's vocals and some pretty naive lyrics.

The quality of this album is actually pretty good. Not good, but pretty good. It is impossible to overlook the fact that the songs are substandard, only kept alive by David Bowie's excellent vocals. But songs like Uncle Arthur, Silly Boy Blue and Rubber Band is actually good songs. The rest is best forgotten. In any case, I very much prefer the naive David Bowie on this album to the one cynical David Bowie on the likes of Let's Dance and Tonight. But this album still fails by some country miles.
