2 stars Black Sabbath goes Nordic mythology.

Their sudden embrace of the Nordic mythology seems a bit hollow to me. But who cares.... In any case, this album were the forerunners of the power and black metal overcrowding of Odin's bedroom a decade later. A band from Faroe Islands even chose this album title as their band name.

It is therefore a pity that this album is nowhere near being a masterpiece. The only original member from Black Sabbath's best days was Tony Iommi. He had hired in the perennial underrated Tony Martin on vocals, the sadly deceased powerhouse Cozy Powel on drums and even a keyboardist. The result is sadly not a doom metal album. Instead, we get over-bloated heavy metal with plenty of AOR textures.

The standard of the material is pretty abysmal. Only songs like Valhalla and Anno Mundi is good songs. The rest is forgotten as soon as they leaves the room. The band tries their best, but I am not convinced that Tony Iommi is the best generic solo guitarist out there. He is much better employed as a heavy doom/sludge riff master. This album is a waste of his time. Tony Martin is in fact the only one escaping from Tyr with any form of dignity. This album is in short poor and not worthy the Black Sabbath label.
