Not exactly a bottle of the finest Montepulciano d'Abruzzo.

The debut album from Paolo Siani & Friends is a mixed bag. The label on the tin says Italy. The speakers on my climate controlled office brings me something that reminds me about the US and the Dutch symphonic prog scene. Persephone Dream's latest album is the one that springs to mind. But also some Dutch bands also springs to mind. A dozen or so, to be precise. There are some strong hints of the music Arjen Lucassen & friends has put out during the last two decades. And yes, there are also a lot of RPI here too. The vocals are both in Italian and in English.

The overall quality is good throughout. Good, but not as spetacular good as the excellent cover art work would make it to be. The art work is the best thing about this album, I am afraid. The mix of English and Italian vocals is in my view not a good combination. I am a stylistic conservative. This album is a stylistic anarchy. The same goes for the music which is far too varied and unfocused in my view. I like varied music in the meaning of being focused. This album ain't. I am afraid Paolo Siani has fallen victim of the debut album syndrome. This victims of this disease always tries to hard and also tries to cram in everything. It is like serving beef stew with ox beef and lobster. Not tasty at all. And that is what this album is: A mix of ox beef and lobster. But this album is by no means a failure. Just slightly disappointing. But I am really looking forward to hear something more from Paolo Siena.
