3 stars 'Stinkfist' - Tool (Single)

Here is a track from 'Aenema' that I found fairly enjoyable. While I have not found myself to be a fan of the band Tool at any time, I am a casual listener of some of what (I consider to be) their better material. From an album that was plagued by endless filler material, the album opener 'Stinkfist' stood out to me. Featuring an exotic guitar riff to start things off, it builds in its meditative sludge before really erupting into something quite angry. The latter half is then dominated by a sort of instrumental noise experiment, while keeping in touch with the rhythm of the song. May sound a bit abstract, but the song is fairly catchy and structured for a Tool piece. Maynard's vocal performance is in good order here, although the only instrumentalist that really makes a mark is the drummer Danny Carey, who proves himself to be one of the best at what he does with this song. A very good song, and I wish that the album had keep up this level of enjoyment for me.
