4 stars On a long trek attempting to discover new obscure bands to listen to I recently came across GONG's 'Radio Gnome Invisible Vol. 1 - Flying Teapot'. I was a total virgin to Gong's sound and I was pleasently surprised and equally weirded out by what I was hearing. This album is hilarious and the music that accompanies the comedy is brilliantly done. A perfect (and perhaps only?) example of a quirky Psychedelic Jazz Funk Space Rock Opera. The vocals are very upbeat and comical. The "Banana, Nirvana, Manana" chant had me laughing outloud. With the combination of the goofy voices and sometimes equally goofy instrument arrangement I found myself reminded of Hannah Barbara cartoons of the 60's and 70's. Some of the voices would fit right in an episode of 'Wacky Races'.

My only dislike in this album goes to the oh so subtle title of, 'Witches Song/I Am Your Pussy'. It's not a bad song musically and I really like the Robert Wyatt'esque chorus section. But the song is really ruined for me when Gilli Smyth hops on her 'brum' stick and her once lovely voice transforms into a shrill and obnoxious witch laugh that really makes the tune far less listenable. Definetely not the "sexy" song I was expecting as another reviewer had described it. I also feel a little awkward listening to a song where the opening lyric is "I am your pussy." But maybe that's just me...

All in all though this is an amazing album and I highly reccomend it and listen for the groan in 'Flying Teapot' and tell me if that doesn't sound like Tommy Chong on the crapper.
