3 stars After "Individual Choice" (83) JLP got thrilled with the world of synthesizers and sequencers. His second chapter "Open Mind" is another equally sequenced experience but with a different flavor:

1) Open Mind: Jean-Luc with his colleague Chick Corea (what a pal..!) plays the opening track with some Latin-music chromatic, thanks to Chick. 2) Solitude: A really atmospheric proposal. JPL is plays his violectra and grand piano perfect (as usual).

3) Watching Birds: It's a nice piece. The "vedette" is a Zeta electronic violin with tons of effects. Chick Corea plays the synthesizer solo and Casey Scheuerell drums and tabla.

4) Modern Times Blues: With this track JLP makes another ductile approach into the music that he will compose in the future. George Benson plays an attractive jazz-funk guitar solo.

5) Orbital Encounters: Another Jean-Luc's "orbital encounter" with Rayford "Spock" Griffin on drums. This is a pleasant jazz-fusion "slice".

6) Intuition: We found on the last layer of this cake a Jean-Luc very plugged into programmed machines. His Barcus-Berry violin, with several effects, sounds very charming.

In general this album is good. Possibly, this is not the Jean-Luc Ponty that we knew from "Aurora" (75) or "Imaginary Voyage" (76). His new scheme is a little softer but it's growing in sophistication and elegance. I'd recommend this album just for jazzy ears. Three and ½ jazzy stars.
