3 stars Giant For A Day - 35th Anniversary Edition

1978...The symphonic-prog genre is crumbling...

KING CRIMSON doesn't exist...

GENESIS release "And Then There Were Three".... successful, but clearly not the Gensis of old...

ELP release the abominable "Love Beach"...

YES releases the jumbled and generally annoying "Tormato"....

GENTLE GIANT, seeing the writing on the wall...decides to complete the transition they began on "The Missing Piece." In September, "Giant For A Day!" was unleashed on the world...the world ignored it. First, the gimmicky cover eclipsed the music (although it was arguably no less gimmicky than the cover of "The Missing Piece").

GG's long-time fans were sharply divided...few if any new fans were attracted...the press and radio all but ignored it...and for some god-forsaken reason, the band performed 0 (ZERO) live shows between January '78 and May '80...

I would describe "Giant For A Day!" as a nice pair of brown shoes...in a closet full of black tuxedos. Simply put, it's a darned good collection of 10 well-crafted, VERY well-played pop tunes with progressive rock overtones, nothing more and nothing less. Perfectly enjoyable and a an absolutely worthwhile acquisition for students of this brilliant, "hard-luck" band's history...

3 (OUT OF 5) SOLID STARS
