4 stars This has been known as one of Dream Theater's most look-downed albums of all times. I've heard a couple i know complain of how soft it is and how different it is. Soft? Different? yeah its different and some stuff is soft but dude not in the entire album lol. In fact me and some of my best friends have nothing against this album at all its really not bad. Yes some of the songs are very different comparing that to IMAGES AND WORDS and AWAKE but however this wasn't the final product that Dream Theater wanted and even if it isn't to me this album is probably the most underrated album of all time and it freakin rocks. Well first off mr. sherinian makes his second but in a way his first appearance on this DT album. Nesxt both mike portnoy and john petrucci and derek make their backup vocal debut along with mike portnoy's awesome lyrical writings as well then of course you have some cool what i would say groove rock influence and other influences here in this album as well. First off you have NEW MILLENIUM very great song here with some cool keyboard and guitar duet rhythms with very great rhythm drums plus John Myung also debuts his playing of the very legendary CHAPMAN STICK one of my favorite instruments for a bass player. this song also has one of my most favorite chorus in all of dream theater's songs very very catchy. Next is YOU NOT ME i honestly don't like this song as of course DESMOND CHILD had to ruin it by adding his bad lyric writing in it. but it does have some cool wah rhythms from the guitar so its okay at times. Then comes another awesome song known as PERUVIAN SKIES Great Lyrics here and plus a very aweomse blend of PINK FLOYD meets Metallica. i love it when these guys play this song live cause they add in great covers like HAVE A CIGAR and WISH YOU WERE HERE along with ENTER SANDMAN and WHEREVER I MAY ROAM. the solo also rocks by the way. Then comes another great soft song by DT HOLLOW YEARS at first i was like MAN THIS IS DEPRESSING but now i really like it. very great vocal work by all the guys who sing on this plus john petrucci has some really great slow latin guitar parts in this song as well. Next comes the very heavy BURNING MY SOUL which to me reminds me of Metallica's THE THING THAT SHOULD NOT BE but anyway its not my favorite but its not bad gotta a cool keyboard solo though so props on that. then comes one of my favorites songs on the album HELL'S KITCHEN DANg this song will rock your face off its nothing but a pure prog metal instrumental that you have to just get the album to enjoy cause i ain't spoiling anything on ya. Then next comes a very groovey, funky, gospel like song known as LINES IN THE SAND this song i really like too not to mention DOUG PINNICK from King's X does well by singing back up on the chorus. the guitar and piano tradeouts in the rhythm is really cool too very funky. Then comes the very heart warming and very awesome TAKE AWAY MY PAIN as john petrucci pays tribute to his dad for his passing away very emotional song brought a tear to my eye. plus a very emotional solo by JP. Then from emotion we go to the very upbeat JUST LET ME BREATHE i love this song the rhythm is so catchy and plus the dueling solos just blow me away like crazy. Then comes a very underrated DT song known as ANNA LEE a very ELTON JOHN inspried song and its not bad but i really don't care much about Elton john so i usually skip this one. HOWEVER, trial of tears OOOOOH BABY very awesome song a great DT epic (which doesn't suprise me cause almost all of their epics are awesome) just absolute blew my mind of how well each member does with a great guitar and keyboard and plus even a drum fill solo as well. This song definitely has got some killer funk to it. So pleace don't let other people say this album is bad it really has some great moments but still i wish that the label didn't hold them back for their final product oh well....4 stars
