THE COMPLETE JACK JOHNSON SESSIONS

Miles was a fanatic about boxer Jack Johnson and was approached to do the music for his documentary about his life Miles' titled it "A tribute to Jack Johnson".The follow up to the hugely successful "Bitches Brew" During this era of Miles' career,he would record huge improvisations and jams and the better ones were cut to the album.Two songs in specific "Right Off" & "Yesterdaynow" were constructed together by producer Teo Macero from various takes & solos and these were used for the documentary and album.Unfortunately for Miles it didn't chart as high as Bitches Brew,although some fans would argue the content was fair superior. Though many different songs,alternative takes & versions remained unheard,they released them nearly 40 years later for everyone to hear.

I'm a big fan of this era of Miles and thoroughly enjoyed the complete sessions to "In a Silent Way" & "Bitches Brew".But found this one particularly hard to get to grips with.The original album itself is incredible but with such long songs and repetition,I found it difficult to stay engaged.The jams their selves are of high quality and include great performances with an incredible line-up.But there are only so many versions of the same ten minute songs I can listen to.It's certainly something great for fans but for first time listeners try the original album not only will it be easier to digest,it also will be far less expensive.
