3 stars "Why Don't You Do Me Right / Big Leg Emma" is a single release by US experimental rock act Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention. The single was released through the Verve label in 1967. At the time of release the two tracks featured on the single were exclusively available here. They have since become available as bonus tracks on the Rykodisc re-release of "Absolutely Free (1967)". Itīs actually not entirely true that the tracks were exclusive to this single release because "Big Leg Emma" was also featured on the "Son of Suzy Creamcheese / Big Leg Emma" single from the same year.

Both tracks on this version of the single are in rīnīb style. "Big Leg Emma" features a more light mood than the pretty dark and rather heavy "Why Don't You Do Me Right". "Big Leg Emma" is enjoyable enough but to my ears itīs "Why Don't You Do Me Right" that takes the prize. Itīs a really great track that one, featuring some dark and menacing whispering vocals by Frank Zappa.

The single is hardly an essential purchase today as it is featured on the Rykodisc re-release of "Absolutely Free (1967)" but back then, this must have been a pretty great release. A 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.

5 stars Two of my favourite back to back early Zappa tunes, these songs showcase the pop songwriting panache Frank could so effortlessly oooze. Big Leg Emma is a catchy sophomoric pop tune and Why Doncha Do Me Right is a heavy rock cruncher, one of the best in his catalogue. These songs are essential building blocks in the Zappa works that every fan needs to hear to understand his developing visoin. I like to think Why Doncha Do Me Right is about his first wife, Kay Sherman, but I've never found evidence to support this theory. This is Zappa your kids can instantly like.
