THE VERY BEST OF SAGA

Watch out, this NOT the best of Saga. In fact, Saga Greatest Hits would be a much more fitting title, since this compilation shows only the pop side of Saga. All their hits are here, of course, but this band from Canada had much more to offer than pop songs, even though they are good ones. Since their debut in the late 70´s Saga had a strange mix: radio friendly pop songs side by side with strong progressive tracks. Although they did two albums in the mid 80´s that are very commercial, their later output was almost pure progressive, making this CD even more awkward and misleading.

So, I can´t really recommend this album for anyone except the mainstream pop fan. Mind you, all the songs are good. Even when Saga went commercial they embellished their already catchy songs with tasteful arrangements, excellent vocals and skilfully playing. However, they have far better stuff, specially for the progressive listener. If you want a good Saga compilation that make justice for their work try Defining Moments (volume 1).

Starting all over?

Provided with their hits Wind him up, On the loose and Humble stance this is only a mediocre rock/pop album anyhow and not enjoyable for a proghead. We have polished and radio friendly songs in the majority which are nice to hear but by all means - you cannot be excited. To get familiar with the superior aspects of the band there are offered much better compilations, f. e. you can start with 'Remember When' from 2006 with a mix of good studio and live songs.

So there is nothing more to say: disappointing - I recommend to beware of this album.
