3 stars And all that was

I am far from knowledgeable about the NIN catalog, thus this "review" is directed at the visual experience. Documenting the band's 2000 "Fragility v2.0" tour it was originally planned to be shot by a typical film company, before Reznor changed his mind and decided on something more DIY. Portable digital cameras were given to members of the crew who shot much of the footage from around the halls, even from the audience. These were combined with director Sheridan's shots for an experience that feels very fan oriented. You do get some of the irritating shakiness from these portables and I would always prefer a purely pro-shot live show with minimal edits, but for the most part the decision works to create something interesting and in line with Reznor's intention.

The show itself is pretty impressive, with a good mix of songs and moods. My favorite parts are when the industrial chainsaws are turned off and they drift into these moody instrumentals, particularly the ones that incorporate piano. These are the songs I can relate to at the moment, when the noise gives way to the ethereal tracks punctuated occasionally by the heavy guitar or Reznor's rage. The stage is simply gorgeous with lots of fog illuminated by glowing golden or dark blue lighting, very moody, sinister, and enchanting. Behind them for many of the songs are three really high vertical screens, like columns, on which they project beautiful and mood-appropriate photography and images. The great staging and Reznor's willingness to open up, at times even walking right into the audience and touching people, provide an emotional and highly charged evening of rock and release.

Apparently the disc features a gold mine of Easter eggs, an annoying premise I'm far too lazy to investigate. But if you're into that stuff, this release will give you ample opportunity to hunt for goodies. Were I more a fan of NIN's music I would add another star I'm sure, but for me it's just a good DVD to check out. If you are a fan of NIN you will surely LOVE this DVD.
