3 stars Djam Jams in Pajamas?

No Commercial Potential is a two-disc set of two jam sessions, one from 1985 and one from 2002. It's really interesting to hear the contrast in improvisational style between the two periods.

The '85 jam/improv set is from their first cassette release titled "No Commercial Potential", that negative stamp a lot of record executive creeps would put on prog artists back in the '70's that was primarily responsible for most the great progressive bands from that era going bad. Some artists take that kind of criticism as a badge of honor. Anyway, these guys had formed as a band back in '84, and they clearly were influenced by the prog that had come before. The jams here are as interesting as the titles: Where's L. Ron??!!, Dwarf Toss, and Blue Fred (which clocks in at nearly 30 minutes). It's all a basic two guitars, bass, and drums jam.

For the second set, ".And Still Getting All The Ladies", they decided to title the three jams after The Building and two elements of a building, The Door, and The Window. More Djam jamming, but this time they've got a synth! These were recorded during their Night For Baku sessions, but nothing here reminds me of any of those tracks, which are a diverse lot. The first two jams are kind of slow and spacey. For me the last one, The Window, is the best of all six tracks in the package, very inspired, energetic, and clocking in at over 27 minutes!

"We talk in pictures not in words", is printed in that little clear section on the left of the CD case. Hmm, where have I heard that before?
