3 stars An improvement on Neroli, for sure. The usual ambient structures are still here, but with much more variety. Interestingly, the first sixteen are all rather short and often quite different from one another, with a final track that takes up almost half of the album. There is still a feeling of lack of direction, and in the end it fails to make a lasting impression. Great music to have in the background whilst you do something else (like surfing prog archives), not an album to sit down and listen to with full attention.

If you appreciate ambient soundscapes (like me), this is a three star album. If you don't, the rating should be more between one and two. By the way, my version comes with a cardboard sheet instead of a booklet, and provides no information. And the cover is really hideous (what were they thinking?).

2 stars I remember seeing some reviews (when this was released) that compared it to "Another Green World". No. Where the earlier album had a mix of real instruments and warm, organic synths, this album is comprised of nothing but cold and sterile electronics (I'm reminded of two albums released by Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh several years ago, entitled "Music For Insomniacs"). And while "AGW" had a timeless sound and a melodic sense, this music seems to have been composed by a machine that wanted to emulate modern-sounding electronic music. The shorter pieces are tolerable, but the last track is 32 minutes of repetitious tedium. I kept thinking that some sort of hypnotic trance would envelop me at some point, but instead I was ready to scream. I never thought I'd sell an Eno album, but "The Drop", "Nerve Net" and "Neroli" taught me to listen first or else......
