4 stars New Trolls, one of the earliest and longest living of the Italian rock groups, did already in 1971 what Osanna and Il Rovescio della Medaglia did soon after: a Baroque-style rock album in collaboration with the Argentinan composer Luis Bacalov (who had done music for spaghetti westerns among others). Concerto Grosso per i New Trolls is a charming classic. The next fruit of that collaboration, Concerto Grosso N. 2, appeared in 1976. (During the years in between the group had been divided in two stylistically different camps, but that's another story.)

The third similar album was released last year, and if I remember right its reception here hasn't been very warm. I haven't heard that album in its entirety, but in the light of this compilation it can't be that bad. In fact more than half of the 51 minutes of this release comes from that recent work. But anyway the happy thing is that this set excludes all the (weaker) material of the source albums, ie. the tracks without Bacalov's orchestrations. Therefor if you enjoy the Baroque excursions of this band more than their conventional rock output, this CD is a very nice one to have.

I understand those opinions that regard this hybrid music as slightly phoney and sentimental kitch, but I guess I'm romantic enough to sincerely enjoy it. Naturally it helps that I like the real Baroque music too, Bach, Vivaldi, etc. Of course this music cannot be compared to these Baroque geniuses, it's certainly more sentimental. Call it kitch or easy-listening if you will. In my opinion this marriage of a pop group singing in English (pleasant voices they have) and the real orchestra is a very harmonic one. Songs are melodically beautiful and the orchestra sounds gorgeous with all the dreamy strings. Warmly recommended to the romantic souls who enjoy Baroque! (I wonder why "La Leggenda" above the band name. The informative album name is perhaps clumsy too, but it hits the nail.)
