Schizophonia biography
SCHIZOPHONIA was an obscure progressive rock group from Geneva formed by Marco MISEROCCHI and Marco CALDI in 1996. For their only album they were joined by Thierry HOSTAETTER and JB MEIER for recording, and the material was produced by the more known producer David RICHARDS for their private release. The record is a piece of art rock inspired by the likes of PINK FLOYD and similar artists.

3 stars The whole story for this Swiss duo starts in 1996 in Geneva, when painter Marco Miserocchi, who also happened to be a true prog enthusiast, met Marco Caldi, an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, with whom he shared the same music tastes. For the next couple of years the two men worked hard on their own songs and they came in touch with producer David Richards, who had worked with Queen, David Bowie, Chris Rea and others.Richards decided to help the duo, lending his studio and providing electronic drums in their debut. Two more drummers, Thierry Hostaetter and JB Meier participated in the recordings and the album ''Quaternaire'' saw the light privately in 1999.

PINK FLOYD-inspired Neo Prog is the name of the game here, delivered with French lyrics and a cinematic atmosphere akin to the British pioneers of the sound, maybe with a touch of PULSAR in the more spacey/symphonic sections. The result is pretty close to native acts such as ADN, PHAESIS or SAQQARAH, slow-paced, deeply emotional and slightly psychedelic textures with impressive guitar solos and a huge, atmospheric keyboard background.Very often though the music becomes extremely grandiose, being built around dreamy voices and ethereal soundscapes and bursting suddenly into sharp electric guitar solos and monster, orchestral synthesizers. These guys composed music that tended to be theatrical, sensitive and dramatic at the same time, having a very balanced sound and measuring the levels of energy in every track.Apart from the cinematic keyboards there are still some more angular synth flights and a few upbeat, rhythmic tunes in a typical Neo Prog approach added for good measure.''Danse des ombres'' is the absolute highlight, a great example of how Marco Caldi mixed emphatic dual guitar parts with keyboards and Miserocchi's slightly distorted but always sensational voice to offer cinematic, FLOYD-ian Prog Rock.

No further releases or info around the duo indicate that ''Quaternaire'' was something like a bet for them. They sure won this thing, the album is a fine example of French-styled, spacey Neo Prog with some unique soundscapes to be found.Warmly recommended.

3 stars This is a pretty good album and the only one this Swiss band recorded. Lyrics are in French and the overwhelming influence is PINK FLOYD. I can understand how that PINK FLOYD flavour could be too strong for some people on this record, this isn't very original.

"Ecume" is a top three track for me. Very "Division Bell" sounding actually. Sounds slowly build as the guitar starts to soar a little. Vocals after 1 1/2 minutes. It's fuller a minute later then it settles again as contrasts continue. The guitar is the focus after 5 minutes as it soars tastefully for about a minute. Vocals and drums become the focus early on in "Elements". The guitar starts to soar beautifully. "Quaturmaire" sounds cool with the sounds of thunder and a heavy soundscape as vocals join in.The guitar is just screaming 4 minutes in. Some laughter late. "Megalithes" is an instrumental. Guitar and drums start to lead the way. Some vocal melodies join in. It's ok.

"Danse Des Ombres" opens with drums and percussion as vocals join in. Guitar comes and goes. "Psyche" has an experimental intro as almost spoken vocals come in.The guitar starts to make some noise. Singing and a fuller sound follows. "L'abime" is another top three track along with the next song. This one opens with samples, drums and vocal melodies. Such a full bodied sound here. Vocals after a minute. The guitar is lighting it up before 2 minutes. It settles before 8 1/2 minutes to the end with acoustic guitar, flute and whistling. "Aquarius" is the closing instrumental. Again very FLOYD-like reminding me of "Echoes". More soaring guitar. Some good contrasts in this one.

A good album that fans of the PINK FLOYD sound should enjoy.
