The Crystal Sun biography
THE CRYSTAL SUn is a UK-based outfit, who released their debut album Landscape on independent record label 12 Apostles late in May 2008. Which is pretty much all that is know about this act - or as they state themselves on their homepage: The members of The Crystal Sun collective seek no individual attention or adulation. They realise that they are merely cogs in the greater machine.

From the press relase for their debut album a few more facts can be found. It is likely that this act started in 2005, as this was the year when a contact of 12 Apostles was invited to overhear rehearsals by a then unnamed band. The person in question was so gripped by what he heard that he immideatly contacted 12 Apostles - who subsequently asked if their contact could approach the band for material they could evaluate for a possible signing. However, no replies of any kind came, and as time went by it was thought that this outfit had disbanded.

Come 2008 and 12 Apostles unexpectedly recieves a finished master tape from this act, now titulating themselves as The Crystal Sun, with a brief note stating that this is material the band themselves are pleased with. The compositions are regarded as being of high quality by 12 Apostles, and a few months later the CD Landscape is released.

4 stars This debut album by UK act The Crystal Sun is an innovative, intriguing effort.

The band, anonymous by choice and image, have looked back in time to late 60's psychedelic music and the early 70's Krautrock movement to find inspiration for this creation, apparently. The songs as such are instrumental for the most part, with 3 compositions containing spoken words rather than vocals, and the organ is the dominating instrument here; central throughout apart from the one track which is a guitars only affair.

Wndering acoustic guitars, staccato riffs with distinct kraut-tinges and echoing; twisted and twisting distorted and dissonant guitar sounds are all elements used to add melodic and psychedelic textures to the songs; and in most cases a driving, melodic bass line and drums flesh out the tracks; and the bass guitar in particular adds a contemporary touch to these compositions which without doubt are looking back rather than ahead in time.

One to check out for fans of psychedelic music in general and Krautrock in particular this production; many of which should find this one compelling.

Thanks to windhawk for the artist addition.
