Orpheus biography
Orpheus is an atmospheric rock project with progressive elements which was formed in 2006 by vocalist/guitarist and main songwriter, James Young, and drummer and co-songwriter, Thomas Vallely. The lyrical themes revolve around nature and the ocean, exploration and history. The band released their debut album, 'Philosopher of the Sublime' in May 2010 through London based experimental label Paradigms Recordings. This introductory album saw the band use a soundtrack-like approach to their music in which influences as far flung as Dead Can Dance were evident. Most of the material on the debut album derives from the unreleased 2006 demo, and was recorded between April 2008 and March 2009. In early 2010 Orpheus began writing their follow-up release, 'The Mind's Exotica', and this was recorded between August-October 2010. The style present on this EP shows a different approach than that on the debut album. A total of 10 musicians collaborated with Orpheus on this release and although clocking in at 24:35, the result is the fruit of much hard work and dedication. This year (2011) Orpheus are working hard on preparing their follow up, second album. The band hints that the approach will again be fresh and different than previous releases, but still focussed primarily on creating a special atmosphere. The theme to accompany the release has not been considered by any other music project, so expect something interesting. .

3 stars What is this? Emo prog? The music is actually very good, and very progressive. The swirling guitars and keyboards are nice, and the rhythm section plays the complicated time signatures quite well. But those moaning vocals just put me off. Singer James Young sounds to me like he listened to far too many of those moody late eighties / early ninties glam bands that filled up the "alternative" airways. As a guitaris and keyboardist, however, I think he has a promising future.

I think, if this album was released as an instrumental piece, it would get regular listens around my household. But as it is, I'm glad I have a copy, but it will only come out on rare occasions.

Thanks to chris s for the artist addition.
