Fleshvessel are an American extreme progressive metal ensemble from Chicago, Illinois. The project was formed by multi-instrumentalist Alexander Torres in 2019, playing an avant-garde style of death metal featuring pronounced influences from jazz-fusion and chamber music. Fleshvessel's debut EP, Bile of Man Reborn, was released on I, Voidhanger Records in 2020, consisting of a single twenty-five minute song in three parts. Its concept, as described by Torres, is "an exploration of the human condition and our infliction of duality upon the world. The music is representative of the confusion, suffering, and anger we all see and experience daily, but also the hope that still remains." For this release, Fleshvessel consist of Torres (who juggles guitar, viola, drum programming, door harp and Puerto Rican cuatro), keyboardist/vocalist Amos Hart (who wrote the song's lyrics along with Torres), fretless bassist Sakda Srikoetkhruen, flautist Gina Hoetzer and whistler Jason Burse. The label compares Fleshvessel to Phlebotomized, Demilich and Mahavishnu Orchestra, and references to Nocturnus, Edge of Sanity, Lykathea Aflame, Kayo Dot and Gorguts are also warranted. ![]() "Bile of Man Reborn" EP (2020)

Once again, I hope I'm not wasting the PM team's time with this one; their sole release is only 24:45 minutes long, though I know certain groups have been admitted to PA based on an EP alone (Truthseeker, Einna, Ohgod! and the mighty Mare come to mind). Regardless, I'm bringing this to your attention as it's exceptionally good, and I hope the team gets more enjoyment out of this than the last Demilich-inspired group I suggested.
As for the subgenre, I was heavily conflicted, and ended up flipping a metaphorical coin.

The inclusion of Mahavishnu Orchestra in there is intriguing - given nothing else in the list is similar. 😄 |

It'll make sense once you listen to it! As the label (delightfully) describes, "The first part of the track sounds as if FLESHVESSEL had dug up the putrefied cadaver of MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA for one last spiritual voyage of theirs."

I guess this is how death metal musicians pay respect to the musicians that have influenced them: an insult but it's with death connotations (putrefied cadavar) which they think it is cool...

Not sure why the words an insult but its, as I cant imagine why anyone would wish to insult something they are acknowledging an influence from. 🤔 Is this an insult, too? 🤷🏻♂️ |

maybe I misunderstood, I am not a native speaker, but calling Mahavishnu Orchestra "putrid cadavar" is fine? Funny? What am I missing here?

^And thereīs your proff...itīs a pretty legendary quote from Toxic Waltz by Exodus (aka one of the seminal thrash metal acts). Thereīs just something special about the metal scene (especially the more extreme part of it) and how darkness, gore, and horror, can be perceived in a positive light, and in some cases even be made fun of or laughed about (for example the way Macabre combines childrenīs songs with lyrics about real life serial killers). Call it tasteless and stupid...itīs for the initiated. You either get it or you donīt. If you donīt, those who do will just enjoy it even more ![]() Itīs just another example of a counter culture...

The only thing that bothered me here was that Mahavishnu Orchestra was called a "putrified cadavar". Do I have the right to say that I think it's done in poor taste (to put it gently)?

I believe in freedom of speach, so by all means say what you want. Personally I found it funny and yes itīs probably an ode to MO rather than an offense.

Cristi, extreme metal is sort of an inversion of logic, language and decency! It's like Michael Jackson saying BAD when he means GOOD only with more guitars, bass and drums! Hehe
