I just realized this Japanese band is not here in PA as I was looking for them in the database.
The following text is from here: http://gnosis2000.net/reviews/berlione.htm "No, this is not another lost 70's Italian reissue, but instead a powerful Japanese quintet featuring guitar, bass, saxes, keys, and drums. Their sound could best be described as a Canterbury/RIO-influenced rock with a healthy dose of mid-period King Crimson. There are strong jazz elements, comparable to the Hopper/Dean period of Soft Machine, and the angularity and moodiness of Univers Zero. Guitarist Naoya Idonuma dominates many of the tracks with his finger-blistering leads, playing in a multitude of textures, reminding at times of Beck, Fripp, even Zappa and Santana, but the similarities are more event-driven than any sort of conscious emulation, fitting a style to the moment. Hiroo Takano (saxes) generally works in close conjunction with Naoya, but does split off from time to time for some eloquent solos. More than anything else, it is his saxes and the restless rhythm section that connects their sound to the Canterbury/RIO style. All taken, this is one excellent album, especially considering it's their first! Fans of Soft Machine, Crimson, National Health, and Henry Cow will most certainly enjoy this one. (Peter Thelen - Originally published in Exposé #1, p. 9, Edited for Gnosis 1/20/01) " Not sure where, but Avant, Eclectic and JRF teams should be involved. I have their first album, a great one at that. Intense, high paced, goes from relatively sane to crazier moments. Great progressive material. Edited by avestin - January 23 2010 at 16:24 |

Hmm, the influences/similarities really make me want to check these guys out. Are there samples available anywhere?

I only have the self-titled, but it's one of my favourite albums from 1992. It had been a while since I last listened to it. Excellent album! http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=58100&PID=3251409#325
Based on the self-titled, really, I'd be fine with it in Avant or Eclectic. I'll add it to the Eclectic chart and vote yes. I think it would be fine for Eclectic, though Avant may describe the approach better and it'll appeal to Avanteers (and Canterbury scene lovers). I'd forgotten just how good this album is. Truly a great album. It's got some great DUNish qualities (and PdP stylings) too. Lots of Canterbury and RIO stylings. Edited by Logan - January 24 2010 at 12:27 |

Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. It can be much like that with music for me.

Il Berlione was a band that had existed in Japan where I lived in the 90's. They announced two albums and dissolved. Their existence is a legend in Japan now. Their information and material are very little now. Of course, it doesn't exist in "YouTube" and "MySpace" either. If the discussion of this band advances, I want to help. However, it is a current state that I do not have information for them so much either.

Laser Pace
have to convert mp4 to something I can play in WinMP10. il Berlione no samples at all. I'm aware of the name in prog circles from the very beginning of my Internet-surfing experience (late 90's) but that's about it. Synkoke yes. 'Hey, let us play Eclectic Prog!' 'You mean Eclectic or eclectic?' 'Both!' |

It's an excellent album, and it was cleared for Eclectic before. I believe it also was cleared for Avant with three votes (but then you've got a big team so I don't know how many votes you need to clear a band). Assaf was on a roll with bands quickly cleared by multiple teams.

En garde!
Actually, I think it works well in Avant while being fine in Eclectic for it's Canterbury and Avant stylings. So if Avant wants it, avant gets it as far as I'm concerned. It's actually one that I would have recommended first to Avant and as a second option Eclectic, so my fine for Eclectic vote can also be considered a good for Avant vote. :) I think RIO/Avant rather describes the musical approach better. |
