very different bands from each other but I'd like to find more bands that are similar and have a sound thats somewhere between these 2,
The Necks - pulsing trance-jazz, with minimalistic tendencies yet rhythmically dense,
Supersilent - improv, ambient, noise, part electronic part live instruments, clattery jazz with focused direction--songs that start low-key and build to a loud bombardment of rhythm and sound,

stuff like this is perfect for reading, nothing more fulfilling than taking in an entire 60 minute song by The Necks! might bore some to death but for me I love that propulsive nonstop groove with slight variation,

Yes! I started going over the whole Supersilent discography last year and apart from 7 I have all. Very interesting to listen how they evolve through their albums. The ones I like most so far are 4 and 5.
You'll find more threads here:

As for Necks, I only have Townsville which is brilliantly hypnotic and I will get their other releases as well.

I'll confess, I ordered 1-6 at once and then 8 after a month, since I liked it so much.... Embarrassed

1-3 is more raw, more improv and sound/noise oriented, but I personally find it's intensity and overall experience very worthwhile!
I could send you some samples if you want; but it'll have to wait until monday as I am not at home until then.

What would you recommend me with regards to The Necks, as I only have Townsville?

I'd definitely like to hear a song or two from 1 - 3, if you can provide thanks!

I don't even have Townsville yet, I plan to get it soon!

I'd definitely first recommend "Chemist", as its 3 x 20 minute long songs as opposed to most of their albums which are usually one 60 min long track per CD , "Chemist" allows you to take in 3 pieces of Necky goodness at shorter intervals....I'd also say "The Boys" is also a unique album in their catalog as its a soundtrack to the Australian made movie "The Boys" (which I have yet to see), its 7 shorter songs, ...and of course if you want to go for their more standard -one song/hour long- CDs; "Drive By", Hanging Gardens" and "Aether" are all brilliant IMO,

one of these days when I have the extra scratch I want to get their massive 4CD release "Athenaeum, Homebush, Quay & Raab", (one song per CD)

Yeah, this one I saw being recommended over at Progressive Ears.com by several people but I reckoned I should listen to more of their stuff before "committing" to such a big purchase.

I'll send you some samples of 1-3 from Supersilent on Monday.

I love Supersilent when they hold back from cacophony.

well, one last call if anyone's got any suggestions as far as bands similar to The Necks or Supersilent, I'm still eager to hear them,

this band Triosk I discovered is pretty rad, great ethereal trance-jazz stuffs, similar to The Necks, but shorter songs and more digital tomfoolery!

I love The Necks and especially their Sex and Aquatic albums. I have listen to them countless time as background to conversations, studying, driving etc. I don't know much about that style of music but I think 'Music for Airports' by Brian Eno has similar sound and provides the same great colourful canvas (althought it has not those wonderful crisp clash cymbals) .

hmm, is that all electronic? I usually prefer the organic feel of an actual band playing with perhaps some electronic/studio-edit accompaniment instead of it being purely mechanized....but I'll check him out,

While it surely isn't completely organic, it *feels* organic, which is what really matters.

I love The Necks. Drive By is probably my favourite, but I haven't heard anything that I don't like by them yet. The latest, Chemist, is divided into 3 tracks instead of the usual hour long meditation, and there's a fair bit of overdubbed guitar - it's almost Neu-style motorik in places.

The only live recording I've got is the 4 disc 'Homebush' set which is excellent - any other recommendations?
