Tubular Bells. The only track that reached the same level was Ommadawn part 1.

I am very pleased to say that Mike Oldfield happily appeared as a guest on SPACE PIRATE RADIO.  this was 1982, when he brought the 5 MILES OUT tour to California.  Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. an amazing show.  he hates interviews but he heard my show had played his music as an import in 1973 & when other commercial stations wouldn't touch them. he was like a kitten, childlike but sincerely flattered when I said I thought he was one of the greatest guitarists ever. the only bizarre thing was when we met the next morning after the concert, having breakfast in the Sunset Hotel Restaurant, he casually smoked his joint while the rest of the clientele ate their cheese omelets & hash browns.  no one asked him not to.  Hollywood on the Sunset trip.  I'm honoured to have his ID for SPACE PIRATE RADIO.  as for faves, each work is wonderful.  I've played Ommadawn quite a lot, but I love Incantations & Hergest Ridge & everything he did for Virgin.  thank you for indulging me.

I love it Drew and, having lived at the foot of Hergest Ridge for 5 years (it's still only 20 miles away now!), I have a special affection for the piece. I prefer it to Incantations, rate it almost on a par with Tubular Bells but Ommadawn is the best for me. I also really love Return To Ommadawn, which was a recent revelation. Smile

I'm so jealous of you living so close to the Ridge! I hiked Offa's Dyke in 1985 (while I was living between Box and Melksham in Atworth) and had seen Tintern Abbey and Chepstow in 1978 and have held the Welsh marches dear to me since my thesis paper on Edward IV led me to yearn to see some of the places of his youth (though I was living in Norwich, doing research at UEA and London libraries). Though I discovered Oldfield with The Exorcist phenomenon swirling around Tubular Bells , nothing has ever captivated me--resonated so deeply within my soul--as Hergest Ridge (though a lot of Anthony Phillips' pastoral work--like The Geese and the Ghost--comes close). An all-time fave.

That's an interesting post... while you were over in the Marches, did you get to visit Mortimer's Cross, the first battle where Edward led the Yorkists in 1461? That's 14 miles north of me. Smile There's a mill on the edge of the battlefield which English Heritage opened to the public until about 15 years ago, which had models of the battle at various times of the day in glass cases. I wonder what happened to them?
