With the latest gossip saying that Martin Barre may not play with Tull again.
The question begs: Should Tull cease to be if Martin is no longer in the band? |

In truth, Jethro Tull is Ian Anderson... but Martin Barre has (almost) always been part of the project. I guess in the end Anderson will do whatever he wants to do with the Jethro Tull name. However, if Jethro Tull would tour again, without Martin Barre, I would be rather disapointed at not getting the chance to hear Jethro Tull with Barre (I have not yet attended any Jethro Tull concert, and have been thinking about doing so if they tour again).

No. Ian is the main man, even if Barre has been there for like 97% of JT's existance.
To me it's like KC and Fripp. Doesn't matter who is in the band, as long as Fripp is still there.

I won't support Tull without Barre, so I picked the first option.

Is quite simple. Even Ian Anderson said it once "No Martin Barre, No Jethro Tull"

Tull without Barre? I'm still irritated that Barrimore Barlow and John Evan left Tull.

No, but it would be a very different Tull. Ian Anderson once said that if it were not for Martin, Tull would not have been. I take that to mean that Tull would not have lasted much beyond This Was, Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus (with the timely presence of Tony Iommi) aside. Anderson may be numero uno, but Barre has also been a vital force. No one can replace Martin, but I am wondering who might step in. Any rumors on that?

Why rumors? Florian Opahle usually plays with Ian: http://j-tull.com/musicians/florianopahle/index.html.

Barre give Tull a certain quality that makes them Tull, that fact is undeniable. Now whether they should cease if he leaves, that's debatable.

Agree with this. As much as I love Martin Barre, the band is really Ian Anderson. A year ago I probably would have said no way, but after seeing Ian live on his solo tour and how well the Tull songs were done, I'd have to say that Tull can survive without Martin Barre.

By the way, we talk like Tull already fired Martin, but on the band's website tours announced as Ian Anderson's ones, not a single word of Jethro Tull tour: http://j-tull.com/tourdates/index.html.

^ Good point. Anderson could easily have gone out and toured as Tull without Barre, but chose not to, and he owns all of the rights. Barre is an essential part of the band.

^ Barre is an important part of the band, but with or without him (I saw both live) the band sounds like JT.
