I hope this isn't just another random mismatch poll to you all, but these are probably my three favorite bands.
They don't sound like each other, but I think that they are similar in ways other than simply how they sound. Some of these ways might just be my personal opinion, but maybe you can see it too, if you know them. They're all in the archives, but are not quite the first thing you think of when you think of "prog" (especially Deerhoof, whose inclusion in the archives, I imagine, was not welcomed by everyone). The reason that I made this poll is because I don't hear much discussion about them, so I thought it would be interesting get some idea of your opinions on them to maybe see where I fit into this community. For proggier groups, my next favorite bands include Mike Oldfield, Yes, King Crimson, and Gentle Giant. So who do you like best? And what do you think about them? Nicky

well i adore Deerhoof........sorry come at me if you will but we cant all like the same thing........like i say......i love my prog but do like stuff that is just different.....as and why someones put deerhoof as "hipsters" is beyond me.......considering they've been going a very long time and its only the past few years they've got a wider audience......i have most of their stuff and seen them once and they were fantastic live.

I'm not surprised that Faust is clearly the winner here.
^ I saw them too, a couple years ago :D. Great show! I'm very grateful that I was able to at least see one of my favorite bands, because I don't expect I'll ever have the opportunity to see the others ![]() Speaking of which, why did Slapp Happy not perform during the '70s? I don't think I ever heard why that was. I thought maybe it had to do with them relying on the studio too much to really perform the songs they recorded (even though they eventually did), but even Faust performed in the '70s and they were built on the idea of the studio as an instrument. Slapp Happy apparently refused to perform live.

That's a stupid statement. Objectively. If you dig right down to it, every prog = hipsters. |

What is all this hipster talk? I don't think I'm that out of the loop from contemporary culture, but I don't get what it means. Is it someone who likes really popular things or really unpopular things? Who is a hipster? I don't think I've ever seen one of these people in real life. It all seems made up to me.

Haven't heard Slapp Happy. Deerhoof's Reveille is delightful. Faust, as stated upthread, are, well, Faust. Hmm, I may have to think on this a bit.

I understand perfectly that Deerhoof is not for everyone and I don't blame anyone for not liking them. However, I suspect that maybe people know them mostly for their short poppy music like "Panda, Panda, Panda," which I think is a good fun song, but doesn't show all that they're capable of. If anyone's interested, here are a couple of their most interesting songs that I've heard:
I want to get Reveille. My brother tells me "This Magnificent Bird Will Rise" is a really good song.
