Well, it is about time to give one of the truly original bands in the PA database the attention it deserve. I approached Flairck and their music with a great deal of scepticism. I was still unconverted when I did the interview with Flairck which you can find here. I am still not an all out convert to their cause. The sole reason why I am hesitant in embracing their music is that this music goes against everything I up to now have regarded as my taste in music. There is no electric guitars here, no moog, no hammond, no electricity at all. Just organic acoustic music played with in total 150 instruments during their 20 odd albums. To be able to like them, I now have to accept that the floor in my living room is in fact the roof and vice verse. I got their 22 CDs box and gosh is there a lot of strange music there ! This is exactly why Flairck is such an original band even in PA's database of original bands and music. This band challenges those who think electricity is king. ......Because Flairck has proven you can make excellent progressive music without any electricity. Try to grasp that one, dear reader........... So I raise my glass with organic orange juice to salute Flairck and to suggest that they deserve your attention and their own appreciation society. Besides of my hesitant scepticism towards their music, Flairck is also a platinum selling band. OK, that was in the 1970s. But this proves that there is a lot of Dutch people out there with an excellent taste in music. Feel free to join this society and add your voice to this thread. |

Of course I need to join here with loud rounds of applause! I am primarily a fan of rocking drums and high voltage electricity, but Flairck manages to get similar levels of energy and attitude out of their set of 150 acoustic instruments. Flairck has been a continuing part of my life for around 25 years now, so I can safely guarantee that if you give them your attention and find yourself spellbound by them, it will be a lifelong love affair! |

Time for a recruitment drive, I think. I can already see some movements in the closets down in the members database. So just to chase them out of the closets, here is a video for you. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8srvHD58gCk That's a song from the platinum selling debut album. Symphonic progressive rock....... acoustic.

I've been interested since I heard about them, but I know if I got interested enough I'd have to buy the box set, and 22 CDs is not what my house needs right now. Listening to the youtube track anyways. Starting with a violin is a good way to get my attention - I love violin :) Edit - yep, should not have watched that. I was pretty impressed at the 8 minute mark but expecting that that was as impressed as I would get ... but that pan flute bit (that is called a pan flute, right? Maybe it's not) impressed me even more. The interest just grows...

I've been a Flairck fan since 1985 or so when i first listened to them on a prog radio show on mexican radio called "Spiral", then i went after the vynils and then after their cds. Finally i bought the 22 box set with all their albums and some years back I saw Erick Visser playing live presenting his solo album, got to say i love this group because it opened my musical taste (which was almost only prog at the time)to folk music which became my second favourite after prog.

Another recruitment drive......... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVmOjh20DWE Probably their most known song Voorspel in Sofia. Rosenbach: Flairck opened my mind in every sense. Not only in music. The floors in my home is now the roof. And no; I am not doing drugs. |

By accident; all the three Youtube videos I have posted so far are from their debut album Variaties op een Dame. Well, at least you now know which album you should buy next. Eeehhhh....... I need to dig out some videos from other albums too. Here is one from another album http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-Xcvbuj1sA Edited by toroddfuglesteg - March 23 2010 at 14:15 |

I have been listening to the Encore live album........ and reviewed it. 4 stars. It is the acoustic version of Deep Purple's Made In Japan.......... when it comes to vibes and musicianship. Bang your head and raise your fists. Encore is a truly amazing live album. It is unfortunate only available in that 22 CDs box. But then again; that box has some true gems. I am on an amazing journey in that box and find music I did not thought it was possible to perform. I am truly blessed.

Yes, the Sofia part sounds familiar to me. As a Dutchman I was used to seeing Flairck on the tv from time to time in my youth. In my memory they were more middle of the road than they are in the Youtube video links that I clicked on. I don't know if they kept the artistic level high. But the old vids are surprising. The artistic level was quite high.

^ I don't think they kept their quality as high as it was originally. And I stopped keeping track of them around 1990.
And where is Netherbelgium? Is the orange revolution coming back ? ![]() |

It is normal, I suppose. I remember Erik Visser, when he stepped out of Flairck in the 1980's, saying that the Flairck - members got families, and then it probably becomes more of a job.
Netherbelgium: I'm a Dutchman living and working in Belgium. When you cross the border often enough, in your imagination at some point in time it ceases to exist. Besides, in the Netherlands, Dutch people who live in Belgium are being called "Nederbelg" (Netherbelgian). Edited by Moogtron III - March 29 2010 at 04:04 |

By the way, if you're into Flairck you should check the ducth group Zenga, founded by two ex-Flairck flute players: Peter Weekers and Annet Visser; i have 3 of their albums wich i deeply recommend you.

I have seen that Flairck seems to have quite a few fans here from South America. In fact, they also recorded a live album in Chile. I haven't noticed any other fanbases outside of Holland, NetherBelgium and that one camel from Scotland. So, does anyone have an explanation for their 'popularity' in South America? |
